can you think of any?

I prefer Lumet's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" (directed in his early 80's) over "12 Angry Men" and "Network". I still haven't seen "Dog Day Afternoon", so that opinion may change.

Can anyone think of another going off on a high note?

Just to give props to Lumet, don't forget Serpico, Prince of the City and The Verdict. Agree on the greatness of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

Haven't seen any of those. Will check them out, though I fear that Pacino in Serpico won't be able to match Alway's Sunny's Charlie Day as Pacino in Serpico.

Fincher with Gone Girl. Alfonso Cuarón with Gravity. Ben Affleck with Argo. Kathryn Bigelow with Zero Dark Thirty. Still thinking.

You're kind of cheating, and I disagree with every one of those except possibly Zero Dark Thirty.

Seriously, Gravity > Children of Men? Argo > The town?

I was kind of talking about their definite last film,ie before they died or retired, not their straight up most recent (though I have no problem with including those in the thread, you're just wrong, doe).

I think a director will always peak before their last film. I can't think of a director retiring on a high note.

Forgot about Gone Baby Gone. Easily the best of the trio, and one of the few movies to ever get me questioning my own morality. So no fricking way that Argo was Affleck's best.

I actually liked The Town better personally. I think Argo is his most solid film, he hasn't had a bad movie, though.

The Town is bad. Argo is okay. Gone Baby Gone is great.

Yea, that's kind of been pointed out already. And shoot me for having an opinion.
