So I'm trying to get as much information as possible for my son. He's graduating highschool this year and wants to go to school (sowela) for plant process technology. He was told by an Army recruiter that the reserves would pay for school and help in the hiring process, thru Sasol, when he's done. What questions do I need to ask at this point? Anyone familiar with the reserves?

Be careful cause the recruiter will bold face lie to you to get his numbers

Yes he will get tuition assistance and some VA benefits, no the Army will not help in the hiring process.

Yeah, I figured. I'm hoping several people give me their perspective on the reality of it and not rely on a used car salesman.

Not entirely true. The Army Reserve does have partnership programs with major industries to train (using their military skills) individuals who would have an equivalent job in private industry.
And I am active duty with the Army Reserve.

Tell him if he wants to join the Army to look into ROTC.
Starting out as an officer is nice.

Two schools of thought on reservist in the oil field, some employers love the discipline and the fact soldiers get drug tested on the reg, and;
Those employers that don't like the drill schedule, and if your kid goes in the Guard they get called for state emergencies like hurricanes.
But I would bet 90 times out of 100 an employer will go with the kid with military experience.

This is exactly what we were told.

If joining the military for college help, National Guard is better then the reserve. They have tuition exemption and GI Bill.

Correct.

Correct with a caveat. An Army Reserve Soldier is not under state authority. Hence he will (in general) not be called out for any state emergencies. However, for an oil rig a monthly drill schedule with (at least) two weeks per year active training is a hinderance. By law they cannot discriminate because of that.

Agreed.

Just get it all in the enlistment contract

Why Army?
I would also explain to your son that what he thinks he wants to do now is likely to change in the next four to six years. Please consider that before making any life altering choices he can't take back.

Just finished my recruiting duty 6 months ago. I'm active Marines been in 9 years. If your son wants any benefits, he needs to go active. Reserves and national guard get the reserve gi bill which you can look it up for exact figures but they DO NOT rate the $4500/Yr tuition assistance like Active duty does. If you have more specific questions just ask

If you want to get in touch with me directly I will gladly answer any questions you may have. I have kids the same age and I know the concerns you have.

I would agree that the Guard does have certain benefits (both federal and state) over an Army Reserve Soldier (only federal). But those benefits vary from state to state and I am not aware of any Guard training/hiring partnerships with major industries.

What mos would your son want to do?

Thanks, I'll do that soon. He's been talking about becoming an operator since he was 10 years old, so I'm fairly confident this is where his heart is. Just trying to get him on the right path.

No worries. We are not doing a good job of letting people know. With as many kids trying to find a way to be trained it is a shame this is not better known.

Process technology, isn't that a two year degree? Does he really want to serve guard or reserve? I only ask because minor certain of the tuition costs. I wouldn't think that it is a lot and that the process operators make a good living. So it wouldn't take long to pay off any debt if he had any?
