Ferguson aside, bad police out are out there

In my opinion, what is happening to Darren Wilson is a travesty and it is disgraceful how the media and politicians are flaunting this case as WW3-Black vrs. White.
With that being said, there is a story nearly every day of a cop killing an innocent old lady, beating a suspect inches from his life, or killing dogs for fun. Pile on the checkpoints, brake tag inspections, stop and frisks and other ridiculous fricking MOs and we have society gradually saying its OK to have a police state day by day.
I am on board with cameras on lapels and repealing ridiculous laws that give officers the right to overreach. I would even be on board to have another look at the grand jury system. I think decriminalizing marijuana at a federal level would go a long way to focusing police effort on violent crime.
Lastly, incentives for giving tickets as a benchmark of individual success as an officer is morally reprehensible to me. Train our officers to better serve society and devote the time to solving violent crime instead of watching for brake tags.

It's a travesty. There are so many opportunities to protest police brutality and overcompensation that it is a shame a bunch of idiots decided Ferguson would be the right place to do it.

Agree. Most cops are good guys trying to protect their community. A few are bullies with billy clubs. And the good cops hate those guys because they make their job harder. But we should not pretend they don't exist.

What are you, in your twenties? The only way you can possibly believe things are worse is if you buy into the media hype and/or you have a short attention span.
Police misconduct was WAY worse in the past. I don't want to gloss over the problems that still exist, but let's not forget history either.

Or if you're paying attention. You might think it's worse if you're paying attention.

I am in my mid twenties, and it was probably worse in the past.
Does that mean the never ending list of crimes by police is justified? Things can't change to make it better for everyone? I'm missing something i guess.

Basic reading comprehension skills?
Never said it was justified, never said things can't change for the better (in fact acknowledging how things have improved supports that things can improve). I pretty clearly state there is a problem. I just don't think misrepresenting reality is helpful.

If you just started paying attention sure. I think video recording on every phone and tablet helps bring awareness.
But if you think there is some giant wave of police misconduct that has somehow gotten worse in the past few years, well I guess we will just have to disagree.

Oh. I think it's been this way for a long time. And to be clear, by "this way," I mean "really, really, really shitty."

I don't necessarily think it has gotten worse, I just think technology has progressed to where people can catch them on video better. Human nature gonna human nature.

My friend, there are bad cops of course. There are also bad doctors, nurses, teachers, firefighters, soldiers, marines, airmen, etc. Get the picture? But of all these and other professions, most are good, decent, moralistic people. We do what we can to weed out these bad eggs but as they leave others come in. i.e. most people are good, a few are not. Just the way it is.

Yes, but those other professions don't actively feel the need to defend those unfit for the job. Cops do and do so vocally.

Never been in the military and in combat have you? Things happen very quickly and all you have is your training and instincts along with your buddies to rely on. In this instance, all Wilson had was his training and instincts. If I were a cop I'd probably defend him this time as well.

Add in the layer of a union. It's part of the recipe.

No one here said that Wilson was not justified.
Pay attention to what the OP actually listed.

Sorry brother, I was actually replying to you. But in any case I get your point.

Agreed Ferguson was just a case of thug acts like thug and dies because of it, but the media and the civil rights idiots still buy into the gentle giant lie.

I think cops are generally good ppl, but police departments have gotten into some really bad habits (1/2 that would be solved by ending the War on Drugs and legalizing all drugs) that need to be solved. Lapel cameras would help end some of the habits because ppl are always nicer when they know they are one camera so ppl will treat officers with more respect and vice verse the cops giving ppl more respect.

I have become the biggest critics of police over the past 5-10yrs, and I grew up around law enforcement.
It is disgusting how disrespectful, egotistical, and down right pieces of shite a majority of LEOs are today. I think what happened in Ferguson was justified, but similar instances occur all the time that are not.
IMO, the only way to get LEOs in check is for all agencies to go to go-pro like body cameras. Its a win-win on both sides. Protects the citizens from the cops and protects the cops from frivolous lawsuits.

Anytime you have human beings you will have good and bad and everyone of them will make mistakes. As long as a officer has a good heart then the mistakes can be corrected. No amount of training can fix a bad heart.

The "protect our own at all times" mentality hurts the ghetto and the police force. If both parties did a better job of policing their own and getting rid of the bad apples these types of incidents would not necessarily blow up.
I truly believe that most cops are good people performing an honorable and difficult job but the bad apples seem to get the media attention.
Same with the inner city. I think most people just want to try and live their lives the best they can but the thugs seem to overshadow that attempt.
