Surely he cannot continue as a police officer, and he lost his job for doing his job...this is something I would donate to.

sounds like it will pay his legal fee's and then some will go to backstoppers.
Backstoppers help with officers/firemen injured, permanently injured or families of officers who are killed in line of duty. they will pay their bills, help with other stuff,etc.
