Purchasing a new home and went shopping for homeowner's insurance. Based on some past posts that I've seen here, I looked into ASI. They gave me a pretty reasonable quote, but the broker also quoted me with Centauri which is $400 cheaper...Allstate was $1400 higher

I don't know anything about Centauri, but I'm assuming ASI is the better company (AM Best A Excellent rating according to the quote sheet). Would sticking with ASI be the wise choice? I may also check with Shelter insurance.

Centauri is solid, are deductibles apples to apples?

Yes. The only differences between the policies is that the lowest coverage ASI will write is $395,000 while Centauri is $350,000 so it's about $400 difference on w/h deductible. The home is about $300,000 so I'm overpaying a little there. Not sure if that's a big problem or not.

Not to hijack but also curious about some others.... Agent seems to be pushing a company called federated (less expensive) or occidental (mid priced) and ASI was several hundred more expensive than even the middle group.

Any stories?

ASI is Progressive's HOI unit. If you bundle policies its a huge discount

My homeowners policy is currently with centauri.

I continue to hear good things about them and they're cheaper than most.

Geico also used ASI and Centauri with discounts if bundled.

Federated National... can be stupid cheap if someone has great credit etc. Could be due for a rate increase but we'll see. They've been a bit of a pain the butt with inspections for me but overall very big company that does a lot of things good.

ASI's replacement cost estimator is just very high. Bit out of whack. I'd roll with Centauri right now given those 2 options. Gulfstream, Fed National, Family Security may be some other options...

I have Gulfstream. I like it because they don't have the 5% hurricane deductible. I forget what it is, but it's very reasonable

most non a-hole companies have other deductible options than 5%. Gulfstream does a single cumulative deductible, their deductible program is different and cool.

asi dropped me bc I wouldn't carry flood insurance even tho I'm not in a flood zone. Centauri wouldn't cover me because I have an atv on my premises. Had to go with maison

ASI didn't drop you for that reason. Maison is sometimes pretty cheap but the worst financially speaking

Ok so they didn't "drop" me but said hey if you don't carry flood insurance we won't cover you

Eta this was in January of 2014 after my policy had been active all of nov and dec of 2013.
