I don't mind the salary for Morstead. Given our downward trend of not capitalizing on offensive opportunities, I think a quality punter is pretty necessary. Not that pinning a team down on the 1 yard line matters much with this defense.

Their rookie guard is actually playing out of his mind this year. Given up 0 sacks and 2 hits all year.

Evans looks lethargic

He looks slow in pass protection, especially on the pick 6 last year. The cliff he fell off was real

We've only punted 35x this year, the least in the NFL and have the best 3rd down % in the NFL. That is in a down year offensively for us.

That is the issue. Seems like an unnecessary luxury to me

Still think we should keep whatever weapons we have. Morstead would command that on the market IMO. Yes, punting is not as much of a weapon as it used to be but to me he's been a comfortable constant in an otherwise awful Special Teams unit.

I just don't see losing a top end putner for a gain of +1.2mil in cap. It isn't worth it, there are easier and better ways to make up that 1.2mil.

He is a luxury, but losing 2mil in dead money to save 1.2mil is just not good management in this situation.

He isn't worth 3.5mil to this team for what he has to do, but is his production worth the 1.2mil in savings? Yes and that is why he shouldn't be cut because he is worth the 1.2mil to keep him.

Grubbs will stay because his cap savings doesn't outweigh his worth. Evans will get cut because his savings is more than his worth (i believe dead last in pass protection). Hawthorne will get cut because his savings is more than his worth (one of the worst rated ILBs)

Which is one of the reasons he got this contract. He was a touchback machine who was also a great punter.

The NFL made it less meaningful now though

We need a complete overhaul of our interior line which requires money and we need to find a #2 and #3 corner. So yes, not being able to stop a 3rd and 18 or protect Drew Brees the reason for this.

I'd rather that $1.5 million and then $4 million in savings go towards someone to protect Drew Brees, or a good FA on defense.

His $3.6 million/year puts him within the #1 cornerback range (30 corners make more than that a year)

Any position can be filled for the min.
But what you get is usually the min talent.
I don't see a huge gain dollar wise in cutting him. Perhaps a restructure is in order but I don't cut him.
He's been the only bright spot on poor ST for years.

not that morestead even pins them on the 1... the leg is the king of pinning them on the 10-12 yard line. He sucks and is overrated.

I just don't see the same advantage with the new kickoff rules. He masked our shitty coverage skills there for years.

The difference in Net punting between Morestead at #3 and Green Bay at #20 is 4 yards per punt. We punt the ball around 3x a game.

There are some good points for keeping in 2015. We probably will. I'd just rather pull that band aid now and give immediate aid to the Oline or Defense.

I think the money does more there

I have to give Keenan Lewis and Junior props on that one.

If we were a defensive oriented team, it would make more sense to keep him. He can't be a weapon if we don't have to punt.

Do you really think he sucks? Thinking he is overpaid is one thing but thinking he sucks is another altogether. It would bring your credibility into question if you really believe the latter.

I agree with the OP. Time to cut bait, we have more pressing issues. That money is better spent on guards or CBs
