What are everyone's thoughts on this rifle as an entry level rifle for someone new to hunting? I am thinking about picking up one. I am looking for one to get me through a few seasons of hunting before deciding on a better rifle.

Just went through your same problem last week. Was looking at the savage 110, 111 and ruger American arms rifle. Think I've decided to spend a little extra and get a Tikka T3lite with the blued barrel, around $600. However, I already have a scope to put in it so a package deal may be the best way to go.

Edit: I have a buddy who bought the axis and it does the job just fine.

Savage is a great gun, I would jump up a line to get a model with an accutrigger - any package set up will get you started, after a year or so you will probably want to upgrade the glass.

No rifle mentioned thus far in this thread would need replacing after a year, or even 10 years.

My savage 110/simmons package deal .270 has been through 9 seasons now, came boresighted and was dead on at 100, scope hasn't needed an adjustment in those 9 years, zero misses, besides scuffs and scratches from being well used is in fine shape. And it's been through lots of stand time, 4 wheeler rides, swamp hunts, hunts in the rain, banging against trees and ladder stands on a pull rope. The glass definitely could use an upgrade but really it's all you need for hunting whitetail in LA/MS. I'll replace the scope when I have some disposable cash but I have no intentions of replacing the rifle.

All mentioned are great guns. I recently set out to buy the savage axis II for my wife and future kids. Couldn't find one in any of the local stores. Decided to get the Ruger American Arms Compact in 7mm-08 and added a basic 3-9x40 redfield scope. Grabbed a box of cartridges and was out the door for $715. I can't wait to shoot the gun this coming weekend.

Oh, you're serious?

To the OP, any rifles these days will get you buy, just dont go for the bottom line Rem 770. Just go to the store and find one you like.

I've heard good things about the new Rem 783, but i havent shot it so who knows.

why the frick would you need to replace the savage?

further as an owner of 5 savage rifles, I can assure you they are great guns. after shooting both I prefer the accutrigger for young hunters and the non accutriger for adults.

I just bought a Savage Axis II XP with the weaver scope. I got the gun for $339 shipped & there is currently a $50 mail in rebate on that gun too. So far so good. At some point i'm sure i will upgrade the scope but that weaver is fine for anything up to 200 yards. For the money, it's a good combo deal.

I got the .270

i have several savages with accutriggers.. last year bought an axisin 25-06 to try. Trigger pull sucks but it groups out of a lead sled 3 shot groups the size of a dime at 100yds. You can easially adjust the trigger though, just cut a coil or 2 out of trigger spring

Pretty sure I have this exact setup and the same experience. It hasn't missed yet and I am rough on my guns.
