definitely before, c'mon man..! If you have to ask that question, maybe you are no that right person to bring them to the range...!

Start with a .22 firearm, go on a weekday so it's quieter.
Indoor range? - Wear ear plugs and muffs together to keep the noise down.
If you're shooting semi-autos, load ONE round at a time in the magazine until they're comfortable with firearms.
DO NOT hand any of them a snubby .38 for their first shot. They will shoot it once, set it down, and never wish to shoot again.

we're going the day after thanksgiving and the guys there give basic instruction on the range so I didn't know...
I was going to give them the commandments
1. treat every firearm as if it is loaded no matter what
2. finger off the trigger at all times (until ready to shoot)
3.. do not point at anything you don't intend to shoot
then explain to them the mechanics of the gun, let them use the slide, safety, mag release, etc. (clean and safe of course.
Then show them grip, posture, etc. (then go over this stuff again at the range)

ooh, that's a good one...that's the kind of shite I'm looking for
yeah, I was going to start them on my .45s or rent a 9mm like a ruger sr9. I thought aside from the easy trigger, the 3" .45s would be good so they can feel recoil, and I can show them about anticipating recoil

Start at home with those who haven't touched one. Operations, loading and unloading with an empty magazine.. What to do if you have an audible Pop. Go through some dry firing and plan to take them when the range isn't super busy.

Rent a full sized .22 revolver. Light recoil, cheap ammo, and easy to operate.

Uh unless MIL and wife are built like Eula Ballbuster on Porkys or you never want them to handle a firearm again do not let their first round come from a 45 or 9

That's bullshite. My gf had no problems with my 1911 or USP .45 her first time shooting a handgun. She even used the USP for her CCW course and shot 2"-3" groups on her 7yd target. Fullsize 9mm or .45 are better options than most of the so-called "ladies calibers/pistols".

Upvote for the porky' reference

The .45s are 3"
A little snappy maybe for them

I would go to the range safety officer and ask if he could give you a hand. With those relationships, they would probably take instruction from a stranger better than from their SIL, FIL and husband.

It sounds like his MIL/wife have never shot ANY firearms.

New shooter making 3" groups at 20 feet? Unless she had a lot of practice, I find that hard to believe.

So true. I see this every day at the range where I work.

Yes. The absolute best pistol for the beginner is a single action only .22 revolver.

Make sure you show them how to properly grip and follow through. My gf can handle my G26 just fine too, but she's holding on to my USP for a while it seems.

And it was almost 20 years since the last time my gf shot a firearm before I took her to the range.

She has the target so it kinda doesn't matter what you do or don't believe. She's naturally a pretty good shot which is more common among women than men.

Start with a .22 firearm,
This was the best advice given thus far.
I don't recommend starting a noob with something like a .45 or 9. Rent a .22 at the range if you have to.
