I drove a Crosstrek Hybrid all around Wyoming on a recent trip and thought it was a great vehicle. Definitely had great mpg, a friend in the same group drove a different vehicle and he was amazed at how little I had to gas up.
That said, it was a rental and I have no idea whether it is worth the price. Just saying that I liked it and it did deliver on the mpg.

I like the horizontal engine. I test drove one but decided not to buy any car. Very impressive technology in those cars. Fuji is a large company and I believer Toyota has a stake in the company.

We've got an Outback. It's still new, but it seems like a great vehicle. My only complaint is that ours has a 3 spoke steering wheel so the place I normally put my hands during highway trips is not as comfortable.
Don't know much about the other Subaru model.
We get about 32 on the highway with the 4 banger and CVT on the Outback, 29 mpg overall.

You take a small hit on the mileage due to the additional weight of the all-wheel drive, but to my mind it's worth it. These are some of the most sure-footed cars in any kind of weather.

The Accord hybrid gets 47 combined. Counter-intuitively, it does better in the city than the highway, 50 MPG city / 45 MPG hwy.
It makes perfect sense being the gas engine is the primary drive source at highway speeds, near all electric in-town.
The TDI's do get excellent mpg on the highway, but if the OP's commute is constant stop/start on the freeways he won't receive the best of the TDI benefits.
I don't recall the Crosstrek receiving great reviews compared to other Subaru models, maybe another model in AWD would be better. It has been awhile since I looked at them.
