I hope they arent breaking the bank based off of last season's 3 win season. If they actually look at the full body of work based on WAR, they can see what an unpredictable player they are getting. If the guy is getting paid off last season and next year projections, well, that's a pretty narrow minded use of sabermetrics.

well my explanation was pretty basic and simple. I'm sure the Sox have much more complex and accurate internal calculations.

But I don't think they are paying him an extra $5 million a year because he was lucky enough to be on a team that made the postseason three times and hit well over 150 or so career PA at-bats.

He would not be the first nor will he be the last guy to capitalize off of postseason success. I think you're giving the Sox FO too much credit.

And just like that, Kyle Seager, who is a year younger, gets 7/100. Seager is a better player (especially if you're using WAR) yet he is going to make ~$6m less per year than Sandoval

Well that's just the nature of the business. Seagar was arbitration eligible for the first time. If he was a free agent, he'd be getting at least as much as Sandoval.

Seager wasn't a true free agent though. So it isn't an apples to apples comparison. The Mariners already had him under contract at highly discounted rate for some of those years, that's why he got less. Same reason Trout only got $150 million.

Well yeah, that's my point.

Sandoval is getting $20m a year. Some of it is because he's a decent enough player. Some of it is from postseason success. More of it is because more than one team is perceived to be "in" on him, driving up the price.

His play on the field does not warrant $20m per.

It doesn't. I think they payed a premium for stability. That said, I think he's going to hit very well there. Not 20 million dollar well, but enough to wear people won't continually second guess it.

I know it is not 2011 again since the Sox did not pay 300m again but they did just fork out 200m for 2 players who I believe are less of players than Crawford/Gonzales were at the time.

If they pay the 150m for Lester good lord

Yeah, I agree. It's not let Panda will regress to Luis Valbeuna or anything. He will be a solid, slight above replacement player for them regardless. Money is overblown in baseball. It's just getting crazy that guys like Martin and Sandoval are making money that was once reserved for the elite guys.

Lester, do you think that he will be as good of hitter facing AL pitching? I think his fielding skills will be adequate.

I know the market dictates he is worth 100 Million. But is that a reasonable fair price?

I just think that may not be way to go price wise but I am not a GM.

I think he'll hit like usual, I would just worry about his weight as he gets older, and now that he is paid.

the pitching in the AL east isnt overly impressive to me.

It's pretty much going rate at this point. Free agent baseball contracts are insane, and technically they are paying him during his "peak" years. That being said, bigger people tend to have earlier peak years and they are obviously paying for a position of need. It's not like these things are 10 year contracts, and they will have a ton of money coming off the books in the next couple of years.

I guess they could move him to DH once Papi leaves. So there is always that part of the thinking of the deal on both sides, I suppose.

I bet Hanley gets moved to first when Papi retires, and they see if Mike Napoli can DH. That hip condition of his isn't the greatest though.

what I see on some Boston message boards if Hanley in LF, Pablo at 3B.... then after Ortiz retires/Napoli moves on rotate the 2 between 1B/DH

Isn't Napoli on the last year of his contract anyway?

Yes and they expect Papi to retire next year as well

Yes, but he still has some pop in his bat. I could imagine a Wakefield/Papi type thing where they give him a new contract every year.
