My dad recommended this:

Said it will withstand the test of time better than any other product out there. Is he right?

Or is there another product out there that I should look at?

Yep. Marine varnish is the best. My painter recommends it and it helped my front door so much.

I prefer McCluskey's, but BenMoore makes really great products.

I also have exposed wood on a door and typically use spar urethane...it is expensive as hell, but holds up better than anything else I have used...

even with that, it has to be redone every couple of years...

Epifanes is pretty tough to beat.
MinWax Helmsman spar is a good and much cheaper alternative and comes in an aerosol version with different sheen's.
That being said, the BM varnish is likely to be pretty comparable.

It is the nature of the beast. Be sure to seal the tops and bottoms of all exterior doors.

All that crap sucks use sikkens cetol exterior.

I should know. I am an expert level door refinisher.

But we use a uv cured finish now that is far superior to even that. My finish is 300 a gallon.

OT level refinisher bitches!!!

Cetol is also a nice product, but it doesn't perform as well as McClusley's spar varnish does in the climate I live in. Cetol 1-2-3, otoh, is the schnizzet on clear exterior siding!

I just refinished the Cyprus columns around my house (10 of them). The original painter of our house recommended Farrell Calhoun Spar Varnish. Can't speak to the durability yet, but the finish turned out beautifully. I rolled it on, but can be brushed. Best of all was the price...little over $30 a gallon. One gallon should do for a door. They have a store in the shopping center at the corner of Seigen and Perkins. Good luck.

MinWax Helmsman

Is what I used on my front door. Ive redone it 3 times in 10 years. The first coat the painter put he used something cheap and it only lasted 4 year. I resanded my door down to the wood and put the Helsman stuff. About 2 years ago I light sanded it and put another coat.
