He is the only politician who promised to create jobs and did it. He hired all of the unemployed people in D.C. as govt workers. DC went bankrupt but he still did it.

I was not aware that he did that

The first crack smoking mayor, not Rob Ford.

Crackheads everywhere should honor his memory by not going to work tomorrow.

I lived in the DC area back when he was mayor, and totally detested him. But I will say that if he was in charge of negotiating with Jack Kent Cooke about a new stadium for the Redskins, that stadium would been in DC, close to a metro line rather than in the middle of nowhere PG county.

Barry was, dare I say it, one of the last great openly corrupt mayors. Yes, Rob Ford stepped in recently to carry on that grand tradition, but here in the states Barry was an icon.
It isn't just the being a graft taking drug fiend... Barry had panache. Elected officials who are flamboyant and open about being sleaze bags... well that is what we need more of. We know what we are getting with them.

Like a number of black leaders, he was very embarrassing to the community. Many would prefer to forget him and very few would want to honor and commemorate him.

Word on the street is that his grave will qualify for Superfund clean up money.

He was an OT boss. All he really wanted was hookers and blow.

Barry did Aton for the city. Those that live there know that. But, continue confirming your ignorance.

I don't live there, so I don't know. What all did he do?

Sucks for Oregon. I know Marion Barries are one of their favorite local delicacies. No more Marion Barry pancakes. Sad indeed.

quote:inside DC he'll be remembered for promoting both downtown development and employment opportunities for poor and lower-middle-class African Americans. As Pat Buchanan noted, that decade laid the groundwork for Washington's emergence into a modern, sophisticated world capital; until then it was a medium-sized Southern city ruled by a Committee of Congress.
I don't live there, so I don't know. What all did he do?
Barry, imperfections and all, was a leading player in helping to shape that modern city. Among other things, he had a major city office building constructed right in the heart of a porn- and prostitution-dominated area along 14th Street, NW, not far from the White House. There was a lot of resistance to this inside the city bureaucracy and on the Council, but within a few years the presence of all those middle-class, white-collar professionals helped promote investments in restaurants, shops, theaters, and private office buildings. Today, that area is so desirable that a major developer wants to exchange land needed for a new soccer stadium in another part of the city for the parcel on which the original building stands. The city workers and many Council members oppose the move. It's a tremendous success in terms of Barry's full legacy.
