ETA: Another point - first Hollywood film released on DVD.

as long as we are doing fun facts

Joss Whedon did an uncredited rewrite

The crew apparently hated Jan De Bont with several of them leaving the film (including the cinematographer) b/c he was constantly reshooting as he never could decide what he wanted. They ended up shooting over 4 times the amount of film that a normal movie would use. The budget jumped from $70m to $90m. (probably why Speed 2 was the beginning of the end if he was that big of a pain)

Hunt and Paxton were temporarily blinded by a faulty lighting setup

The "ride" (more of an experience) at Universal was kick arse and placed you at the drive-in theater as the tornado touched down

Yeah, we did that. Hokey, but cool at the same time, kind of like the film.

Yea, I remember standing in there as Bill Paxton was on the video screen giving his spiel about a tornado being "a force of nature" and and thinking "well at least I'm in some AC" but then the actual thing started and it got pretty damn cool.

So actually... it really was just like the movie.

i hated the multiple natural disaster flicks that were made soon after this one though. I'm looking at you, Dante's Peak

One of those films that I'll always watch if it's on. Others include The Rock, Executive Decision, and Rush Hour.

Twister's greatest contribution to culture is that it helped inspire David Foster Wallace to write this essay about T2, which introduce the Inverse Cost and Quality Law: "The larger a movie's budget is, the shittier that movie is going to be."

LINK

quote:

The insidious three-part loop that characterizes Special Effects Porn --

ONE: Astounding digital dinosaur / tornado / volcano / Terminator effects that consume almost all the director's creative attention and require massive financial commitment on the part of the studio;

TWO: A consequent need for guaranteed megabuck ROI, which entails the formulaic elements and easy sentiment that will assure mass appeal (plus will translate easily into other languages and cultures, for those important foreign sales...);

THREE: A director -- often one who's shown great talent in earlier, less expensive films -- who is now so consumed with realizing his spectacular digital vision, and so dependent on the studio's money to bring the F/X off, that he has neither the leverage nor the energy to fight for more interesting or original plots / themes / characters.-- and thus yields the two most important corollary formulations of the Inverse Cost and Quality Law:

(ICQL(a)) The more lavish and spectacular a movie's special effects, the shittier that movie is going to be in all non-F/X respects. For obvious supporting examples of ICQL (a), see lines 1-2 of this article and/or also "Jurassic Park," "Independent Day," "Forrest Gump," etc.

(ICQL (b)) There is no quicker or more efficient way to kill what is interesting and original about an interesting, original young director than to give that director a huge budget and lavish F/X resources. The number of supporting examples of ICQL (b) is sobering. Have a look, e.g., at the difference between Rodriguez's "El Mariachi" and his "From Dusk to Dawn," between DeBont's "Speed" and "Twister," between Gilliam's "Brazil" and "Twelve Monkeys," between Bigelow's "Near Dark" and "Strange Days." Or chart Cameron's industry rise and artistic decline from "T1" and "Aliens" through "T2" and "The Abyss" to -- dear Lord -- "True Lies."

it will always have a special place for me

my dad and I are both weather dorks and watch all the tornado/hurricane shows on TV

I was 14 when it came out and he took me the GIANT screen theater in Dallas and I remember sitting there in the middle when that opening tornado scene came on and just being blown away(sorry for pun).

it has some cheesy acting and lines, but its a fun ride and I always watch it when it comes on.

Nostalgic now, if anything.

The ending is a stupid, ridiculous sham tho.

Love this movie.

And the ride experience is awesome.

The difference is on the ride the theatre screen is playing the Wes Craven movie "People Under The Stairs" whereas in the movie the screen is playing "The Shining"

Another fun fact.

Twister was one of those first movies where CGI made its mark...and everyone was like "Woah!"

True story though...first time I saw Twister, toward the end of way the movie the film started to burn during the last act on the screen...(some stoner forgot to change the reels, I don't know)

But everyone sat there for about 5 minutes...until we were like...uh, the film slipped off the reel...I don't think this is part of the movie.

They stopped the movie finally...and then literally announced..."whoops, sorry." Go to the lobby and you can get a refund.

Sort of the best ending ever.

Just watched Into The Storm, it just further solidified Twister as my favorite movie... although the effects in Into The Storm were fricking awesome...

This thread is an awesome blast to the past as far as teenage years go.

This was a great movie and a very underrated staple of disaster movies of boyhood. I watched the shite out of this movie back then but I haven't watched it in years. This thread just put a refresher on the to do list.

Whenever I see a red dodge ram of a specific year and build, I sometimes think back to this....
