$50 at the Motel 6, and they'd all be alive.
they probably hadn't been on the road for more then 3.5-4hrs.

It's unreported, and really doesn't matter, but given everyone was sleeping and unbuckled, it would appear the 16 year old was given the keys for the night, at least until he got to destination. That's a scary thought for such an unexperienced driver who would not understand road hypnosis or overcorrection when entering medians.

As a father of two lovely young girls, I can't imagine why the dad let his son take that wheel. Other than the fact the plan all along may have been to team drive through the night and get to Florida by the next day. Hence, they skipped a room (hypothetically) to save $$$ and gain time for the trip. 99 out of 100 cases, that would have worked out, and it's tragic it didn't here.

Hopefully this keeps other parents from making the same mistakes. No amount of time or money can compare to the lives of so many people.

What do you think happened then? Why would a 16 year old be driving out of town at 10:46pm with everyone sleeping and unbuckled, unless they were planning on a later stop, or no stop at all?

When I was 18, that's how we got to WV for a ski trip. Through the night, on caffeine, team driving. That's unacceptable if a 4 year old is in the car though

yeah i agree with this. the kid was not handed the keys and told to drive until they got there or anything even remotely close to that IMO. it was probably his 2 hour shift or whatever. totally different.

if i really had to describe what happened, im sure at least one of the parents was supposed to stay awake with him but fell asleep.

I have 16 years of driving experience and even I avoid driving long deserted highways for long periods of time for this very reason. I either put the trip off until morning or get a cheap motel room to avoid it.

Where does it say anywhere in any article that ANYONE was asleep????

eta: Latest report now says the driver told LSP that he fell asleep.
