wm,
wouldn't it be nice if a lot of people drops their cable? That would make cable companies nervous. The only reason I watch sports is I bet on them. No need for me to pay for Housewives of Atlanta.

Yeah, the cable deals are really a complex issue/problem and it's little wonder they're fighting the ala carte channel purchasing so vehemently with the size of contracts channels are offering for the small amount of "desirable" programming.
They will certainly need to make some changes in the future when younger generations of viewers who are more likely to look to internet competition comprise the majority of would-be subscribers.
In Italy, the vastly increasing coverage but also prices of cable led to a crises in match day revenue as many fans were forced to choose one or the other. Ultimately the atmosphere of matches was compromised and decreased the appeal of the "product" on TV.

It really is getting ridiculous. (Also ridiculous is suggesting inflation accounts for the huge increases in salaries). As fans we are kinda screwed though. I don't want to stop supporting my favorite teams, but $325,000,000 type contracts are just absurd.

That's why ticket prices are unaffordable these days. A basketball shoe by KD is what? $150? I make an decent living, but when I'm done paying mortgage, health insurance, car insurance, kid's schooling, food, utility, I'm left with maybe $20 in my pocket.
Thats rough but you could always make more $.

wm, must be nice to hop back and forth from Italy and US.
seems like programming through the internet will be a trend going forward. Like you said especially with younger generation.
The future is not people watching TV programs which cable dish out on a fixed schedule. The future is people click and watching the program they wish on their time (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu) at a way cheaper rate.
Why would you watch TV besides sports? News? Go to CNN.com or Fox News. Who needs to watch weatherman? Just go to weather.com or use your smartphone.
It would be nice to pay for a sports program package at a fixed low price for month/year like Netflix, Amazon Prime. But as long as the cable companies and NFL, NBA, etc, are in bed together, that will never happen.
But if we get enough people to boycott, the game changes big time.

lsu480,
I'm just happy to put a roof over my kids' head. Give them food and clothes and give them a good opportunity for a good life. I have a good retirement plan. But me getting by or need to make more has nothing to do with the issue that we are discussing.

I would love to see it but I think the real danger is less that people balk at cable in the near future in any huge number but simply end up only going to, say, 1 or 2 games in person every season instead of 5 or 6.

i was talking about boycotting the cable companies. When i say "the game changes big time" i was referring to the political game between subscribers and cable companies. They need us to survive, but they are setting the rules.

PS - are you wanting all world-renowned brain surgeons who make ungodly millions per year to cease getting paid so much? What about CEO's of big corporations?
Posted on 11/19/14 at 12:41 pm to PeteRose
I would rather the players, the people actually providing the entertainment, get the money than the fricking owners.

Mick,
a brain surgeon makes around 500k a year. Lebron James made 72 millions last year. You mean to tell me Lebron is worth 140 brain surgeons? A brain surgeon or any surgeon saves lives. Probably countless lives over his career. Lebron runs up and down the court putting a ball in a basket. Who's more important again?

It's real simple - supply vs demand. Athletes are being paid what the consumer market dictates they are worth. Nike and Mcdonalds would not be paying him if he wasn't returning 5x in increased sales.

yes yes yes,
I know about supply/demand. I was talking about the value of the profession. Basketball value is fun while Brain Surgery value is life/death. I was pointing out that Fun has a higher value in our society than Life/Death.

I agree
I guess it was and will always be that way. Back in the day, people idolized gladiators not philosophers.

It will stop increasing when it has reached a balance between what people are willing to pay to watch or attend sporting events.
Consumers will continue to buy tickets, jerseys etc and continue to tune into the games on TV. Its basic supply and demand currently there is a huge demand for sports programming.
Stop buying tickets and watching games on television if you want the demand to stop. Player salaries and ticket prices will slow and then stop. This is starting to happen in college football and some sports where attendance has began to drop off as the product on the field isn't worth the investment. TV deals are currently driving the market especially in college football but eventually the bubble will burst.
Players get paid what their market value is, just the same as any other profession.

do you want to increase the demand for Brain surgerons?
because that would be kind of a dick move.

Mick,
gladiators was the real shite back then. They get the a lot of glory and attention. But they also get the Lions and the spears flying their way. Today's athletes can't compare.

We had Stanton in baseball signing a $325 million contract.
When you account for inflation it's not really that ridiculous of a contract. It's about in line with the A-Rod contract signed about 10 years ago.
Plus his contract is backloaded. In all likelyhood he opts out, and Marlins will have paid about a third of that $325 million number.
You go lead the revolution though. I like watching professional sports. I get why they're paid as much as they are. I'd die of bordem if there were no pro sports. Entertainment is extremely important.
