Name some songs that start the album off with a bang

Rocks Off on Exile on Main Street is a great example. That song just kicks my arse every time I hear it and is a great preview of that hard gritty sound on EOMS.

Thats the first one that popped in my head, before clicking on the thread..

Graveyard Shift off of Uncle Tupelo's first record No Depression.. It just set the tone for the whole record and introduced me to this band..

"hometown, same town blues... same old walls closing in.."

The entire album. But the self-titled opener is 10 minutes of nasty guitar work.

This is Happening
Dance Yrself Clean is all you could ask for an album opener.

Low
1. Speed of Life
2. Breaking Glass
3. What in the World
4. Sound and Vision

I also second Rocks Off on Exile

Superchunk - Precision Auto off of On the Mouth

"Do not pass me, just to slow down"

Pavement - Summer Babe (Winter Version) off of Slanted and Enchanted

Archers of Loaf - Web in Front off of Icky Mettle

I don't have the hipster e-cred that most posters do, but Live did a great job with album openers. They usually used these to open shows as well, and were fantastic ways to open shows.

Throwing Copper - "The Dam at Otter Creek"
Secret Samahdi - "Rattlesnake"
The Distance to Here - "The Dolphin's Cry"
V - "Simple Creed"
Birds of Pray - "Heaven"
Songs from Black Mountain - "The River"
