Ultra conservative/boring - black

pretty conservative - burgundy/merlot/whatever

less conservative - more traditional and lighter browns.

Anything from a walnut/cognac to a dark brown depending on the setting. In a more conservative setting, I wouldn't wear anything lighter than a bourbon color and would tend to stick to darker browns. If I was going to be around a crowd of 30's, I'd have no issue wearing walnut.

Also consider your shirt, since you never want to have more than one thing that "stands out." If you're going to wear a light blue or white shirt, you're good with a lighter shoe color. If you're wearing something bright or an unusual color, tone down the shoes and go darker.

You're way, way out of your element. His advice is spot on.

Whatever the Bama fan tells you with regards to fashion, count on the opposite being right.

You can wear black, brown, or burgundy. Personally I like a darker brown.
