Should 1 RB, 3 WR be the new default?

I'll admit part of this is sour grapes. I'm leaving at least 40 points on my bench every week due to having five WRs who put up 20-point games regularly. Meanwhile my RB situation is a shitshow. I started the season with Peterson and Spiller. I replaced Peterson with Bradshaw, and Spiller with Hillman, and thought I was in decent enough shape. Two weeks later and I'm screwed again.
But you would think with five stud WRs, I could swing a trade with someone, right? Wrong. There's two guys in my league with two undisputed RB1s, and they don't need my WRs, even at a two-for-one rate. Everyone else is stacked at WR too. Meanwhile the other ten teams are either hanging onto one RB1 and some scraps, or total scraps. Unless you have a lot of byes, the FLEX spot is a de facto WR3 spot, and the biggest determining factor in your victories is which WRs you bench.
Check out the list of top 25 preseason RBs on Fantasypros. Ten of those guys have been non-factors for at least half the season, either due to injuries, suspensions, or losing snaps to backfield committee. That's a 40% chance of getting nothing out of some top draft choices. Meanwhile look at the top 25 WRs. There are some up-and-down players (as with any group), but the only one on that list who has missed significant time is Megatron.
IMO, RB2 is starting to become a relic of the 1990s. Nowadays it makes more sense to have a WR3 starting spot and have the FLEX be between RB2 and WR4.

I usually play Ellibgton in the flex but went with maclin this week and it certainly paid off
It's a receivers game these days
Especially in PPR leagues

Drafting Spiller was your 1st problem. Rb1's are scarce and get hurt. I went rb with 3 of my first 4 picks. McCoy 1st overall, Murray in the 2nd, and LeVeon in the 4th.
Also you're exaggerating the 20 point scoring wr's unless you guys have bonuses. I have Jordy and Emmanuel Sanders and they are 3 and 4 overall in my league @ around 19/game. It's a throwing league, wr's are going to be easier to find so you should be concentrating on rb depth especially if you have the glassman Spiller. I had him last year. "We're going to run him till he throws up!" Never again......

I notice you didn't list very many RB on your roster. That's a major problem. In PPR, I drafted Murray at the top of the 2nd, Ellington at the top of the 4th, Ray Rice in the 6th, Pierre Thomas in the 8th, Lamar Miller in the 9th. I've since picked up quite a few RB off of waivers and currently own CJ Anderson and McKinnin.
Did I know which of those were going to be hits and which were going to be misses? Nope. However, I knew that waiver wire WR were going to be easy to come by, so I hit RB anytime I saw value because I knew some of them were going to hit. And they did, so now I have a solid RB corps.

quote:There's more, but they aren't worth mentioning because I didn't want to turn this thread into the world's most elaborate and boring bad beat story. I drafted Tre Mason, but dropped him for short-term help several weeks before the Rams realized he was their best talent. I also drafted Ray Rice, Kadeem Carey, and Jonathan Stewart, who have done nothing. Some of my other waiver wire pickups have been Asiata (good for two weeks but i lost out on McKinnon), Rainey (sucks), and some 1-2 week speculative adds that didn't play out like Jon Grimes and Storm Johnson.

I think we might switch to 1 RB, 2 WR, and 2 Flex.

I know most would think it's ridiculous, but my big money league plays any 5 rb/wr/te combo. I still wind up 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, most weeks but my 1 TE is Gronk.

Personally, I think RB scarcity is the most interesting thing going in fantasy right. now. That said, I agree that WR is too deep. If I had my druthers, I'd scrap kickers and add a second flex.

My big money league has 2 Rbs 3 Wrs 1 Flex
I think it only makes sense such most NFL teams have 2 main back while they have 4-5 Wrs that can make plays.
So for the most part in our league everyone has their RB 1 this is a for sure start and WR 1-2 that are for sure starts. Then RB 2 and WR 3 are where the choices come in. I like the format a lot and in other leagues that only have 2 WR slots i feel like something is missing slightly

Its crazy how few viable RB's there are and the absolute plethora of WR's.
Goes to show you how much the NFL has evolved to passing league.

I like the 2 Flex idea more than just making a mandatory receiver 3.

I have a league where we start 3 WR's and its my favorite format.

Yes it should. I enjoy an IDP or two as well.
