OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A surgeon who contracted Ebola in his native Sierra Leone died Monday while being treated in a biocontainment unit at a Nebraska hospital, the facility said.

Nebraska Medical Center said in a news release that Dr. Martin Salia died as a result of the disease. Hospital spokesman Taylor Wilson said Salia died shortly after 4 a.m. Monday.

Sad. It sounds like he was late getting help because his first blood test came back negative for Ebola after he developed symptoms.

I doubt there was anything we could do as he was so sick before he came here.

Salia, a Sierra Leone citizen who lived in Maryland, first showed Ebola symptoms on Nov. 6 but tested negative for the virus. He eventually tested positive on Nov. 10.

For me, Nov. 7,8 and 9 are what gives people the right to be more than a little concerned about the unanswered questions about this disease - the unknown.

I imagine lots of hugs and congratulatory handshakes when that test came back negative.

It's not really unknown. At the outset of symptoms the virus is barely detectable in the blood. In the US someone with suspected contact showing symptoms would still be treated and would get a second and 3rd blood test over the next 24-48 hours. I have no idea why the second test took 4 days in his case.... perhaps just overwhelming lab workers with high volume in West Africa.

Sure it is if you can't pinpoint the day he became positive. Whether it be a wrong diagnosis the first time or not, four days later he's positive. Where in that time in between the two diagnosis would you feel safe to have intimate contact with someone as in this case?

If someone with known or suspected contact with someone who had Ebola shows symptoms, they should be isolated and no one should come into direct contact with them. In truth it appears that it takes 12-24+ hours to become contagious, but the onset of symptoms seems to be a reasonable time to begin isolation since the contagious stage of the disease is coming.

I think that some people are making too much of the medical community's precautions regarding Ebola, they are obviously erring on the side of caution. When someone is showing symptoms they are possibly contagious, when they aren't symptomatic they aren't contagious.

ugh. Even when you start showing the early symptoms like fever and fatigue you're not that contagious.

But everybody panic anyways

This is very sad. I have a very good friend who is from Liberia. He lived in the refugee camp for many months before he was given permission to come to the United States. He and I bunked together on the MS Gulf Coast when we were first-responders after Katrina. He loves the U.S. He has a perspective on things that few people tend to possess. He still has extended family in west Africa.

He didn't catch it here. Was brought over from Africa.

Something tells me you wouldn't be having sex with your wife knowing "that" four letter word figured into the equation.

I believe the proper CDC protocols call for you to discontinue sexual intercourse when symptoms occur, blue balls be damned.
