Is this what a mid life crisis looks like?

A friend of mine turned 40 this year. He was with a great girl that we all liked- she was 32, pretty and had a good job. After 2 and a half years of dating, he ended it. A month later he started dating a woman he has known for a few years as a friend- she's 38 and has made it obvious she wants kids yesterday. After 6 weeks of dating they moved in together and now they are engaged. Total dating time: 4 months.
Is this what a mid life crisis looks like? As his friends, we are all baffled as to what the rush is. No, his fiance isn't pregnant as they celebrated their engagement at a bar over beer. This just seems way fast like he is afraid of being alone.
We are all kind of just sitting back waiting for the inevitable explosion, whether it is before or after marriage and a kid.

if he had a girlfriend for 2 1/2 years, how would leaving her for someone else mean he was afraid of being alone? maybe he just didn't see himself with the younger woman.

That is not a mid life crisis..mid life crisis is when you are 40-55 and realize you are tied down, bored, and you are running out of time to do all the things you want to do, so you leave your spouse, start wearing cool clothes, and bang younger people.
