My current Acer is 5 years old and is starting to really slow down. I'm looking for a super fast performing laptop for web broswing, streaming, and the occasional games.

I found this on another forum...

Lenovo y40

Coupon code USPY4301113 drops the 2nd model (#59423030) to $629. Thoughts?

It's a damn strong deal. The only negative is the battery but battery is the last thing you should worry about with specs like that

Do yourself a favor and spend the savings from that deal on a real SSD to replace the hybrid drive. Otherwise it will "slow down" like your Acer regardless of specs.

Wait a week.. Too many tech companies having laptop deals to buy one now.

PS what Acer? Mine is about 5 years old but I freaking love it because the battery still lasts about 5 hours.

I've had my acer for 5 years. I upgraded it with a SSD about 3 years ago. My plan is to do something similar to prolong the life of the laptop. Use the HD that comes with it for a year or two, then upgrade to a SSD to finish out the life of it

Acer Aspire timeline X

I love mine, but daily computing tasks take too long. I want to click on something and have it pop up. When I browse on the computer, I typically have both firefox and chrome, each with 5-6 windows open. I've noticed my Acer start to slow down quite a bit over the past few months. I believe I have the Samsung Evo SSD

That's what I do. But it's more like 5-6 browser windows with 20-30 tabs each when I'm on a research binge. I can use upwards of 8-9GB of RAM from that alone. That's probably your bottleneck in the Acer.

In addition to....

Did you run the firmware update and refresh? Evos have a bug that causes them to slow down over time unless older files are rewritten regularly. It has been fixed as of last month but requires the firmware update in addition to the refresh that rewrites the drive (you won't lose any data).

I did not... I'm not well versed in computers so I had my friend install the SSD. Haven't done anything to it since then

yeah SSDs aren't supposed to slow down like that. I like Samsung SSDs, but I hope nothing like that happens again with them. It's great that they fixed it, but there are quite a few such as yourself who have no idea there's a bug and just end up moving on to another computer or SSD brand.

Depending on how much RAM you have in it now, adding a little more would extend its life even more.

I expanded it to 8gb when my friend installed the SSD 3 or so years ago. Pretty sure the 8gb is the max supported. When I have all my browser windows open in any given browsing spree, I'm using 5-6gb. When I really get into a browsing spree, it's upwards of 7gb that I'm using. The laptop in the OP is expandable to 16gb which would be nice. However, I'm going to see how my laptop handles some heavy browsing over the next couple if days. I may not even have to purchase this new one

Don't know if it's a big deal to you or not but the keyboard doesn't light up on that model. I bought a Lenovo recently and overlooked that part and wish now the keyboard would light up.

NOPE! fricking 8 GB? So not even the Windows installation will fit on it? Brilliant.

Yeah, the hybrid drives are not all that great. The SSD part is nothing more than extra cache rather than a place for a full OS install. It can cut load time by a good bit as it learns your file access habits, but it will never touch SSD speeds.

My last laptop during college had a blacklit keyboard. My current one for 5 years does not. Blacklit keyboard means absolutely nothing to me

really? Thats my biggest bitch about the acer..i have to halfway close the lid to let the brightness light up the keyboard enough for me to type a certain letter on it in the dark.
