Would it surpass any other important discovery/event in world history? If there was an immportant breakthrough in the past that would still be more important than discovery of aliens (inventions, etc) what is it?

It would have to be something pretty advanced.

Not just some bacteria on a rock.

Not in the State of Alabama, it would be January 26, 1983.

The day God asked His Coach if He was ready to go home.

If the foreign life forms are advanced the answer is yes considering how vast the universe is. It will be a huge game changer or game over.

I wonder what atheists would do if aliens from another world believed in Christianity.

There are no atheists in black holes.

They would likely hold some belief in a god, since one has been manufactured by every culture that ever existed. Although, if they are advanced enough to make contact, one would have to believe that their science is advanced enough to have eliminated the need for a higher power.
On that note, I think the one thing that could equal or surpass ET life in importance would be some discovery that would definitively prove or disprove the existence of God.

How would science eliminate the need of that?

Because science provides factual and logical explanations and answers for the questions that God is the default answer to. For example, I have a thorough understanding of evolution, so I don't need the whole God and Genesis thing to provide me with a faith-based "understanding of life."
