Can I set up my dads old 5s for myself without having to go to AT&T?

My 5s died yesterday (rip), and my dad has a spare or two laying around. I dont see why I wouldn't be able to set it up as my phone as he is using it as an iPod only at this point, just making sure. I would also think it wound be as simple as hooking up to iTunes and that's it.

If it's from the same carrier, it shouldn't be a problem but you need to switch Sims of course. I might be wrong though..

Switching SIM cards and plugging into iTunes didn't work. I'm sure I fricked something up, but not sure what.
Switched then switched again and now it seems to be working. We shall see.
