Surprising Polls show Huge Conservative and Liberal Support for Net Neutrality

In a new survey, the University of Delaware's Center for Political Communication found that support for neutrality is strong and widespread -- regardless of gender, age, race and level of education. About 81 percent of Americans oppose allowing Internet providers like Comcast and Verizon to charge Web sites and services more if they want to reach customers more quickly, that is, allowing what are often called "Internet fast lanes."
Most surprising of all, given comments by Republican lawmakers over the past couple of days, is that support for net neutrality is bipartisan. Indeed, Republicans were slightly more likely to support net neutrality than Democrats. Eighty-one percent of Democrats and 85 percent of Republicans in the survey said they opposed fast lanes. The poll's margin of error was 3.2 percentage points.

According to a poll released today by the Internet Freedom Business Alliance (IFBA), a pro-net neutrality association of businesses, Republicans and conservatives outside of Washington D.C., seem to think that the idea of net neutrality is actually a pretty good one.
Some 83% of voters who self-identified as “very conservative” were concerned about the possibility of ISPs having the power to “influence content” online. Only 17% reported being unconcerned. Similarly, 83% of self-identified conservatives thought that Congress should take action to ensure that cable companies do not “monopolize the Internet” or “reduce the inherent equality of the Internet” by charging some content companies for speedier access.

Last year, Comcast—the nation’s biggest ISP by a long shot—spent more on lobbying than any other company in the U.S. except Northrop Grumman, the defense contractor that makes the B-2 bomber. Of the $16.4 million it has spent on lobbying and campaign contributions this year, large chunks have gone to the National Republican Congressional Committee ($104,000); the National Republican Senatorial Committee ($87,975); and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ($85,750), according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Boehner, who was among the first to slam Obama’s call for net neutrality regulations yesterday, has received $107,775 from Comcast—nearly twice as much as any other other member of Congress. Boehner also holds stock in Comcast, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Why don't they charge the end use customer by usage like electric companies do.
You buy electricity by the unit (kilowatts) why not sell data by the gigabyte used?

That makes a lot more sense. It's what you get with smartphones.
I'm worried that if we don't have net neutrality, providers will start throttling conservative sites.

They won't like it after the government gets their hands on the interwebs.
Translation, taxes.

This further solidifies my stance, not against "net neutrality," because that term has been twisted and misused, but against the government-based solutions that are being proposed.

The Koch brothers own a lot of fiber optic cable. We'll be fine.

The idea of net neutrality is appealing, but why does everyone seem to knee jerk away from free market solutions and demand that government step in and regulate? Seems counter to the usual conservative/free market sentiment in other areas.

People don't understand. . .
Without net neutrality, things stay the same.
Who is threatening to throttle speeds to websites?

There may come a time when you may find yourself on the other side of an issue with the Kochs. It could happen. What then?

ding ding ding ding ding
Winner!
This is all i tried to argue in one of the threads on this, and i was blasted from the left and right for being "for comcast/time warner/etc..."
My point is and always will be, authorizing government to regulate the internet will have as much success as authorizing the government to manage healthcare. They can't not frick it up.

TV tax works wonders over here.
There is a reason the infrastructure allows me to have way faster internet and pay less than you guys do.

You don't think you are paying anything for that internet? The left loves people like you. When you can trick the people to thinking that getting something from the government is free. Tell me, what is the income tax rate in the UK?
quote:
If your taxable income's over £31,865 above your Personal Allowance, you pay: 20% basic rate tax on the first £31,865. 40% higher rate tax on taxable income between £31,865 and £150,000. 45% additional rate tax on taxable income over £150,000
That ain't free, friend.
