Real talk here

Youd think with the struggle of today that someone would have something to be blue about.

Or is it that people do not take up guitar playing as much as they did back in them times?

I'm with you man. Gary Clark Jr. Has so much potential, but I just don't really like his songs all that much. I wish he would just tear it up more like This.

I'm listening to his live album right now. The song I really like is When My Train Pulls In. Pull that one up on youtube and give it a listen.

The hill country in MS has a ton of young guys who are great players, but the style is in a bit of transition. I ride up to the festivals in Clarksdale at least once a year, but I've noticed the best acts never seem to make it very long. The soul has given way to the shred, in order to appeal to a wider audience. Music in general seems to be just wandering around in circles, so hopefully rhythm will make a real comeback. Personally, I'm about tired of uninspired noodling over 12-bar being served up as blues.

yep. Give these a listen:

Nextdoor Neighbor Blues

Born Under a Bad Sign - Featuring John Mayer

3 O Clock Blues

When My Train Pulls In

best song on his record. The studio version of this jams as hard as any track you'll hear.

If Trouble Was Money

Other tracks:

You Saved Me
Bright Lights -Though I'm sure you've heard this one
Numb
Catfish Blues - Another great cover
Please Come Home
Soul
Third Stone From the Sun/If You Love Me Like You Say

I love guys like Muddy Waters. Those aren't what I would consider mainstream. Maybe a better description should have been not "today's blues". I like the old "insert the forbidden word" blues!!!

I don't know why I've never taken the time to get in to Gary Clark, Jr.

Can someone give me a good starting point?

Agreed. Very talented but I find his music to be kind of bland.

Fair enough. People I typically trust seem to like him, so I figured maybe I would. I enjoyed that acoustic song of his that someone posted above.

The talent is unquestionable. He's also really fun to see live. But yea, bland/boring/soul-less/etc IMHO. Not a diss; major respect and I see why people like him. I just don't find myself going out of my way to listen to his music.

I think he has a lot of soul/feeling/emotion, whatever you want to call it. I actually think his guitar playing is sometimes a bit pedestrian but the reason I like him is that he sings and plays with a lot of feeling.

Yeah, my initial impression is that he's extremely talented and sings with a ton of heart and soul, but there isn't anything truly special or distinguishable about his music - which could be said for almost all standard blues music. I'm a sucker for dem blues, tho.
