Moving away from older immediate family, and other such factors?

Depends on your priorities. Are you wanting to be held back because you need your security blanket or because your family needs you?
Leaving home is the best thing you can do for personal growth

Well, I've lived away from "home" for over 12 years now. But I'm still within a very drive-able 3 hours. However, this would be more like 13 hours, and the folks are just getting older.
Just interested to know if and how this has factored into others' decisions when considering a career advancement.

For myself, very little. My wife on the other hand would not want to move too far away from family.

Very much.
Very close to family.
I am 2 hours away. I could go 3 hours but that'd be it.
Luckily for my and my wife's career that's not an issue.
But if you are talking middle of bum-frick Louisiana and jobs are all dead ends you have to get out.

When's the last time you've been away from family and friends for an extended period of time?
Where is the job?
I was in shitstain, Texas for 2 months away from everything I cared about.
It was horrible.

I guess that's what's making the decision tougher. I like where I currently live, and there may be a few opportunities for advancement (not necessarily where I live but still within driving distance). But it may involve waiting. And it may not be of high quality.

It just so happens to be in "shitstain" Texas.

Don't do it.
God I hate Texas.

I need a little context before I fully consider what you've said. Have you ever lived in MS?

I'm working on a job offer now in the Hou area and leaving The Chuck. The old folks will follow soon after we get settled.

I have lived away from my family for 13 years. I am closer now than I have been in many years. Coincidentally, I got a call today that I am one of 3 people being considered for a transfer to the panhandle of Florida. This is less than 30 minutes from family. I am actually pretty nervous about being around my family that much.
I love my family, but my wife and I are used to our independence. I want the job, but I am nervous that this much time around our family will change our family dynamic.

Move while you can. It's easy to move back to your home town but the older you are the harder it is to move away.

It helps to be fairly close to family if you have kids...we live an hour from the wife's family and 2.5 from mine. Works out perfectly

We have 2 kids and having built in babysitters would be nice. Plus, we want our boys to know their grandparents and cousins better. I am mostly concerned that it will put a halt on my career. I don't want to get too comfortable and get stagnant.

sun tzu asked a peasant why he attempted to build his hut at the intersection of 2 busy trails. the peasant said well, sir, in order to build the best hut in the valley of course, I know the Duke's courtier's and general's run these routes, and surely they must be the smartest in the valley.
The peasant had merely a foundation laid after many rebuilding efforts. Seems he took advice from everyone with royal plumage.
