Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has no problem using dramatic language to make a point. In fact, the congressman, who received some heat for comparing Tea Party members to the segregationist, “white crackers” of the Jim Crow era, is surprised that his word choice caused any controversy at all.

In a HuffPost Live interview on Monday, Rangel responded to those who took offense to his use of the term in a 2013 interview with The Daily Beast.

“I thought [cracker] was a term of endearment,” he told host Marc Lamont Hill. “[The Tea Party is] so proud of their heritage and all of the things they believe in.”

Rangel found some hypocrisy among those who agreed with his comments overall but drew the line at using the word “cracker.” He did offer a reluctant apology for offending anyone with the derogatory term, but he shrugged off the “ridiculous” criticism.

“I certainly would like to have dinner with some of the people that were offended,” he said. “I’m certain they wouldn’t want to talk with me, though. But I’m glad you raised it because it shows how ridiculous it is.”

Neither am I, but the term is NOT a term of endearment.

Yep....and I thought knuckle dragger was a term of endearment as well....go figure!!!

REALLY???? Just how stupid can someone be. This is just more proof that racism, according to the PC crowd, only applies to white people!!!!

Why would anyone care or think what this corrupt old fool has to say.

If he were someone who mattered, that might be different.

I've always found the term humorous due to how ridiculous it sounds (we're far removed from cracking whips, so the first thought for most folks when they hear the term is the salted variety made by Nabisco). But if he thinks it should be fine to refer to me as a cracker then he should be equally at ease if I refer to him in an equivalent term. What's good for the tax-dodging goose...

I never knew this was how the term came about.

what an idiot. i don't think cracker is racist as much as it is just stupid given that no one has owned slaves in this country for 150 years. and even back then, the percentage of white people who ever cracked a whipped or ordered someone to crack a whip is so minuscule as to be meaningless in coining a phrase applicable to an entire race, or even a part of a race in the US aligned with any particular political views (with the possible exception of KKK/Skinhead/NeoNazi types).

Having rendered it impossible to racially offend white people (which, apart from the distant vestiges of whites-owned-blacks slavery, is actually an indictment of non-whites, not whites), this despicable human turd resorts to something arguably worse--equating particular views that have nothing to do with slavery with one of the worst travesties (if not THE worst) in our nation's history. He belittles the names and memories of those who suffered through it. He brings shame on his office and the movements that helped end slavery and legal discrimination.

Good job you f'ing piece of shite moron.
