I don't usually post on the OB. But, I need some help. My teenage son wants a bow for Christmas. Not for hunting but for target shooting. I don't want to spend a fortune nor do I want it to break on Christmas day. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't know anything about this type of stuff. TIA.

i only hunt, so my suggestion would be go to your local bow shop or bass pro. Tell them what you are looking to do, and they will have options

Buy a good used 60lbs. draw one at a pawn shop, or off an outdoor facebook sell/trade group. Brands like PSE, Hoyt, matthews, bear, high country, diamond, are all fine.
If he shoots that for a few years and sticks with it, he'll know enough about what he likes and he can buy a 70 lbs. draw of whatever brand he likes brand new. He could then shoot that for the rest of his life...

Get him a decent, low-poundage recurve. You can get a much better recurve for cheaper than a compound. Also, I don't find compounds that much fun to shoot. They're easier for hunting, but recurves are more fun overall and are better for learning how to be a better archer.

Nice vintage recurves on eBay. Depending on his size and strength, a 35 or 45 draw weight is good for shooting backyard targets.

How old and strong is your son? I know that when I was 13, I was pulling like 45-50lbs, but at 18 I was pulling 70. Teenager is broad.
I know you say you don't want to spend a fortune, but literally speaking, what is your budget?
There are plenty of good bows in lower pound ranges that don't cost as much as these high dollar hunting bows on the market now.

I know nothing about compund bows. Is 70lb pull ideal for deer hunting?

He's 14. 6'2" 155 lbs. Idk if that helps. And honestly, as far as price, I don't even know what the going rate is. Is $150 or less too hopeful?

Good to know. I have been also been looking into getting myself a bow and really don't know much about them other than shooting a buddys mathews every few weeks.

Bowie's/Bass Pro/Cabela's gift certificate, then let him pick out the bow.

Oh Lord, if I do that he's coming home with something big enough to take down a rhinoceros.

I just bought a new PSE Fang crossbow for $299. It shoots 342 FPS & is a super sweet crossbow for a budget price. The bolts that come with are crap though. just buy new bolts and you are good to go...

I'd get him something adjustable in the 40-60lb range and let him go from there. Check out the Diamond Infinite Edge. I'm fairly sure Diamond is still owned by Bowtech. A friend of mine got one for his kid and it's a really cool bow.
