OT Contractors - verbal vs written bids

Had a guy come out and look at a job on my property. I wasn't asking for an immediate bid and was just showing him the scope of the work.
He immediately gave me a verbal quote and said the quote might go up "a few hundred dollars" after he wrote it up. I said great.
I received the written quote today and it is 175% of the verbal quote. Thousands more than what he said on site.
Is this normal practice? Should I question him on this or just get someone else?

there is no such thing as a "verbal" anything.
Always get things is writing.
As in negotiate the price? It couldn't hurt, just be prepared to walk.

nothing a contractor says holds any meaning, only what is written can be trusted, and only with a signature.

Get Someone Else
Its not your job to price it. Its his. He gave you his price. Now go and get at least 3 more.
Make sure the scope is identical.

I take verbal quotes from subs all the time. But they know if they don't honor them they'll cease to get business.

That doesn't apply at all here.
As an individual:
Get Every Single Thing in Writing.
Subs forget, and they forget high.

I think this is one of those moments of pure OT wisdom.

It was learned the hard way.

I learned that contractors will low ball you initially on a verbal. This happened to me when we had roof damage and some collateral damage from a tornado. He mentioned all kinds of extras they would do as well. Never got tot the extras as freebies so to speak. The final written contract was a bit different after all the sales talk.

verbal contracts are legal, but proving them is a problem.
like everyone said, get it in writing.
