Now that the NYC Doctor, Dr. Craig Spencer, is expected to be released tomorrow, and we are reaching the end of the 21 day limits for any of his contacts, how would you grade everyone in how they handled the crisis to date?

My Grades:
Obama: A-
Did all the right things, but wasn't strong enough in demanding the chicken littles to quiet down.
Christie / Cuomo: D- Curled up in a fetal position and Christie even tried to quarantine a perfectly healthy nurse returning from Africa. Worst case of non-leadership in the country
de Blasio: A+ Not only remained strong in his message when Cuomo tried to institute bad quarantine laws, but actually took the same subway and ate at the same restaurant the doctor did to allay fears.

Bonus Grades:
Kaci Hickox: A+
Stood up to Christie and her own governor.
Dr. Carson: F Was afraid to bring missionaries back for treatment to Emory. Without that we don't have the serum that may have helped the two nurses and others.

I don't know the story behind this. What does "afraid to bring them back" mean? Did he have some fearful reservations, or or did he perpetuate fear mongering. I could see both as being "afraid" with one being way worse.

There wouldn't have been a panic if he had closed of those countries that were an ebola risk. Thats just common sense. Makes everyone feel better.

No americans died, but i am pretty sure the two that were shitting and barfing their brains out for a week would have preferred not to.

As an aside I have an irrational fear of ebola because my older brother described the book Hot Zone to me when I was like 9.

LINK Dr. Carson said:
quote:

"There's no question that viruses can mutate to a more virulent form and find easier ways of transmission. And certainly, if that were to occur, it would be a major disaster not only here but throughout the world," Dr. Ben Carson told Fox News's Sean Hannity Monday night.
He said this in spite of the fact that no virus has been known to mutate and change the method of transmission. Ever.

He thought that bringing the doctors here for treatment was risking an outbreak and he would have had them treated in Africa.

I'd grade mmcgrath an F for attempting to politicize a strictly medical issue.

This is what Obama should have been trumpeting from day one... that Ebola wasn't the stuff of the movie "Outbreak" where everyone getting the fever develops the sniffles and an immense need to sneeze at the same time, sending the virus everywhere and killing within hours.

No.

Seriously . . .

no virus has been known to mutate

Perhaps you'd be better served to leave doctoring to doctors, mmcgrath

Let me repeat the sentence I made that seems to have been misquoted by the normal board jokers.
quote:

He said this in spite of the fact that no virus has been known to mutate and change the method of transmission.
I emphasized the part that they are glossing over. Maybe when they finish the 3rd grade they will learn compound sentences.

Mmcgrath, is it just a coincidence that your grades lined up according to political ideology?

Oh, and don't tell me that Kaci Hickox isn't a liberal. That girl is the epitome of what I call a 3rd generation hippie

I do respect her for going over there, though.

You're showing your lack of understanding again.

The way ebola infects a patient makes it extremely unlikely that it would mutate into a purely airborne mode of transmission (like TB or H5N1) - you'd have better odds of it becoming mosquito-borne.

And Carson was an idiot for suggesting it was a possibility. He should know better, even as a neurosurgeon.

No. I would Cuomo the same grade as Christie, even though Christie went full boar with it. Issa called for tighter monitoring but rejected a travel ban so he would get better grades.

Basically anyone who followed science instead of fear deserves credit. A lot of Dems cowered on this one by not coming out and voicing support of the President. Obviously they were fearful, did not understand the science, and were too busy to figure it out. Any Dem who was silent gets worse grades than silent R's.

People that live in rural America are hippies? Come on, she stood up for what she believed in and showed that sometimes people from rural America can have more sense than people from "educated" areas. She and her husband are about as blue collar America as you can get.

Not sure where you are getting my lack of understanding. Viruses can / do mutate all of the time. What they haven't been seen doing is mutating in such a way that they change mode of transmission as you say. The next one we see will be the first.

I am guessing he is an excellent neurosurgeon but generally ignorant on contagious diseases as far as ones that don't affect the brain are concerned. At least that is what I am hoping. I am a bit fearful that her was willing to deceive for political purpose even though he knows better.

Where's your grade on Rick Perry, mmcgrath? I live here in Dallas, and I thought he did a great job.

That girl is a 3rd generation hippie, though. Many of them live in rural "commune" type communities ( a little tongue-in-cheek, bro).
