The Places in America Where College Football Means the Most

quote:

The study used data from Facebook -- the percentage of users that "liked" a college football team -- to determine which states (and counties) had the greatest concentration of college football fans. Using the results of the study, The Times was able to produce a map, which can be seen below. The map highlighted several interesting trends.

Top Ten States by Percentage:
1. Alabama: 34
2. Nebraska: 28
3. Oklahoma: 27
4. Arkansas: 26
5. Iowa: 26
6. South Carolina: 25
7. Kentucky: 25
8. Mississippi: 22
9. Louisiana: 21
10. Ohio: 21

#1 is the State of Alabama and I'm not surprised one bit. College football is dying in the Northeast and Minnesota.

Liking a team on facebook isnt the best way to measure fandom.

oh, I thought they used number of fans killed by other fans of the same team after a loss as their metric

It's not dying if it was never alive.

This isn't surprising. Nobody outside of the South really cares that much about college football. They may cheer for schools but most don't live and die by the results.

Both those regions used to have powerhouse teams...

Isn't Nebraska part of the Plains?

actually pretty interesting IMO. 7 of the top 10 have no pro sports and 8 of the top 10 have no pro football.

the 2 pro football states are 9 and 10.

im not saying im surprised by any means, but it's neat that it plays out this way, regardless of how official the "study" is.

Not "liking" a team on Facebook does not mean not liking college football. Good teams will get more "likes" because people like to "Bask in Reflected Glory." Individuals that like college football but cheer for subpar teams can't have that reflected glory.

Meh, the Northeast has really never been into college football. Rutgers is a historically bad program, and Syracuse and Army/Navy haven't been nationally relevant in a half century. Other than random flashes by schools like BC here and there, college football interest has always been fairly nonexistent in the Northeast and New England.
