Actual Gambling With Your Life (Life Insurance Information Requested)

I'm a 33 year old male non smoker, 6'1" and 225 lbs.
My wife is 31, a non smoker and 5'1" and 105 lbs.
We have two young children and we have decided to buy life insurance. I have spoken with 3 different agents and have gotten quotes from 7 different providers.
We were thinking of going with a straight forward 500K 30 year term policy covering both of us.
Quoted between $67 and $100 per month. Pretty legit piece of mind for cheap, but at 63 I'd be shopping for much more expensive life insurance if I am even insurable.
Most agents have advised to do a combined term and whole life or universal life policy. Since 500K is our number, they are suggesting 300K whole life and 200K 20 year term to cover us until the kids finish college.
Quoted between $140 and $300 per month. It's more than we originally planned to spend each month, but the guarantee makes it very attractive.
What do we really need to buy? What do the ballingest of OT ballers have?

Buy term, invest the difference.

Move this to money board to get better responses.

It all depends on the situation.
Some agencies offer a return of premium, but that just gives you your money back for that "piece of mind" you spoke of earlier. Like, for all the money you pay into your term, if you survive (Hooray!), you get back all the premiums paid.
You might reconsider, and switch the numbers on your options (200 WL and 300 term), as that would be cheaper and you probably don't "need" that much WL.
It all depends on the situation, though.

Buy term now, start converting to whole down the line when you have more to spend.
Or just buy term now, and save/ invest for retirement.

You look closer to 53 than 33... but props on delivering.
