I have a feeling PM will over coach this years team to a grand total of 0 bunts... The reasoning "The ball carries 20 extra feet and we have the power to knock it out of the park".

After yesterday's display trying to bunt, I never want to bunt either. Most of them went into the net. Only one bunt stayed fair.

Hopefully we have fewer bunts and more steals

I'm fine with a bunt in a situation that absolutely calls for it, but I hate when teams bunt in every situation when they have a chance to score.
example I hate: bottom of the 3rd inning 1-0 game Home team leading. 2 hole hitter gets on with a single, 3rd hole hitter .350+ hitter bunts him over. Away team walks the clean up. 5 hole hitter sub .300 hitter grounds into double play inning over. Why not let one of your best hitters swing away? But so many teams will bunt.
Example I don't hate: Bottom of the 8th inning home team trails 5-4, 8 hole hitter gets a single, 9 hole hitter bunts to get him to second. Now you have the top of the order at bat with the tying run 180 feet away.
only when you must have one or two runs, I prefer teams to play for the big inning NOT one or two runs.

See catholictigerfan's response. He hit the nail on the head.
I do like bunts, but not when it is at the expense or our top hitter

I think bunts should be used like 2 point conversions in football.... In situations late in the game that put you in better position, or if a defense is way out of position. Otherwise, dont stop a potentially big inning to move a runner 90 feet.

i guess i'd like bunts a whole lot more if this team could bunt successfully more often.

If a bunt would 100% of the time move a runner up 1 base and give you an out, I'd take it in some situations, but we fail enough that it makes it hard to really like the best result to be get a runner 90 feet closer and get an out with the alternative of getting an out with no runner movement.

CPM's defensive strategy on bunts indicates that he will gladly trade the base runner moving up one spot for the out. We are instructed to simply take the out at first and not worry about the lead runner.
If that is his defensive philosophy, then I don't understand his insistence on using the bunt so frequently while on offense.

That annoys me every time. I understand getting the sure out, but there are times when we have a runner dead to rights at 2nd or 3rd.

Exactly.

I guess i just don't feel confident that it's going to be successful so, i'd rather they just swing.

Good thread on the OT.
Do you think the Tigers will ever start using the 3rd base dugout at home games?

thanks..
decided to edit. the original was rather insensitive.
3rd base dugouts would be shady and cooler during the last part of the season.
