Saturday morning, Marvel and his 4-year-old son Siaden were driving down Robert Boulevard in Slidell when they noticed some road kill on side of the major thoroughfare. This is, after all, the South, so they pulled over to see if they might gather anything useful from this interaction of man and nature.

When they got close, they could tell the animal was a beautiful grey fox whose pelt was in fur-coat condition.

quote:

"I'm hoping he'll remember it for a long time, and I'm sure he will," Marvel said. "We were at Target last night, and he had my phone. He showed everyone we came across the pictures. He's very excited about it."

One thing that annoys me about NOLA.com is that the author's will comment and defend their piece against trolls and ignorants but this interaction was amazing!

What a disgusting little story, and the pictures are even worse. I wonder if while he was playing around with this dead animal he ever stopped to think it may be diseased or carrying parasites? What kind of nut job stops to examine roadkill?

@dznygrl Good point. We should teach our kids that clothes have always come from Old Navy and the Meat Fairy waves her wand to fill grocery-store cases with pre-packaged steaks.

but years ago, the free-spirited Marvel was staying with natives in northern British Columbia who taught him how to use animal brains to tan bear hides.

"That's the traditional way of doing it," he said. "I wanted (Siaden) to learn that. This is how people made their own clothes."

A couple years ago, my dad came around the corner and a spike was standing in the road, it was startled and lost his footing and my dad ran over just the head. He stopped and threw it in the trunk. Not one ounce of meat was damaged.

Does hi centering grouse on gravel roads, stopping and picking them up count as roadkill? If it does – raises hand

My mom smoked a 12 pt w/ a minivan …. She wasn’t hurt I was hours away, local farmer was a happy guy as he loaded it in truck.

What about coonasses picking up snapping turtles as they cross the road ….

It looks pretty normal to me, now I am prolly not stopping to look at a fox, take it home, skin and tan it out but I am fine w/ it

My dad had my mother trained to do this. The eggs make the best cookies ever.
