What happens when a 'thirty-seven-fifty' bottle of wine really costs $3,750

Who's at fault here?

A diner at the Atlantic City, NJ location of Bobby Flay Steak says he was misled into purchasing a $3,750 bottle of wine thanks to an ambiguous message from his server. According to a report on NJ.com, customer Joe Lentini asked a waitress at Bobby Flay Steak to select an appropriate bottle of wine for his party of 10. Lentini alleges that he was served a bottle from Screaming Eagle Winery at a cost of "thirty-seven-fifty," a number he assumed to mean $37.50. When the bill arrived, however, "thirty-seven-fifty" apparently translated to $3,750, a whopping $3,712.50 more than expected. After complaining to management, Lentini and his party were able to negotiate the price down to $2,200 and paid their tab, but he emphasizes he would not have intentionally ordered a bottle that expensive, saying, "I don't know much about wine at all."
A representative from the Borgata Hotel & Casino, which houses the restaurant, told NJ.com they are "confident there was no misunderstanding regarding the selection" of Lentini's wine. And was it worth it? The unintentionally high-rollin' drinker says: "It wasn't great. It wasn't terrible. It was fine."

Has he ever been to a restaurant before? What 5 star steak house has a $37 bottle of wine?

if a wine list with prices was not provided by the restaurant, the blame lies with them

He probably felt bad and under pressure. But ya his case is closed now.

ha, I've been to that exact restaurant when i went to AC a few years ago, I would never have guessed they had a bottle of wine over $500

Siding with the customer on this one. The waiter/waitress should have made it clear that the price was 3,750 dollars. That's a lot of money to spend on a bottle of wine for almost anyone.

lol if I'm ordering a bottle of wine at a steak house, and the waiter/somelier says thirty seven fifty I'm for sure asking if that's dollars and cents

They have a ton of $50-100 bottles, the waitress picked out one of the most expensive ones on the list.

Wow, that sucks. It's hard to find a bottle of wine at a nice steakhouse for $37.50 (in fact I can't remember seeing a bottle of wine on a menu anywhere that was not a whole dollar amount, not something and 50 cents).
At that price point, the waiter probably should have said three thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars just to be clear. At the end of the day, you have to be clear on the price of what you are buying in all circumstances, so I think the customer is more at fault.
ETA: The waiter picking out a bottle at that price point for a guy who probably acted like he didn't really care that much about wine was pretty douchey. That is an expensive bottle of the wine for even the most discerning wine people.

The guy is an idiot. He should've clarified the price, asked for a wine list, refused to pay, negotiated more.
Responsibilities rest in yourself. He's irresponsible.

"I asked the waitress if she could recommend something decent because I don't have experience with wine," Lentini said. "She pointed to a bottle on the menu. I didn't have my glasses. I asked how much and she said, 'Thirty-seven fifty.'"
The drinkers at the table agreed to the price and they ordered, Lentini said.
Soon, the sommelier -- the wine steward -- presented the corked bottle at the table. Lentini said he was having conversation with his companions and didn't really pay attention, but he approved of the bottle.

Glad he didn't just go ahead and order 3 for the table.

100% customer's fault

So she showed him the wine menu and pointed to the most expensive bottle and he looked right at it and the she said the price out loud and he agreed to it as did everyone else at the table and then the bill comes and he's pissed?
How can anyone after reading that defend the guy?

"We'll have the $4k bottle of wine, a couple of Bacardi Siver's and two Cokes."
