Have a 2007 Freightliner Columbia, with the 60 series Detroit Engine, has 700,000 miles but has recently had an in-frame rebuild and also a new turbo , the engine itself is jam up,but I am having a problem with it losing power going up hills, as soon as I reach the top of the hill, it suddenly regains power and wants to run like a racehorse, I Have replaced all filters twice, and still had the same problem, put it on a diagnostic computer, that gave 4 faults, all relating to exhaust temp, 2 were too high temp, and 2 too low temp. The mechanics said that this was clearly a problem with the V-Pod Controller, that controls the wastegates for the turbo. That was a 450 dollar part from freightliner,I told them to do it 600 bucks total, next steep hill, same problem. What else could be causing this?,

If you want to chime in, or need more info, please just let me know, I will be here a while tonight.

And Thanx, even to you frickin' Jokers

Not a diesel mechanic by trade but in my experience most problems with power loss are related to fuel delivery somewhere.

I would give the freight liner guys another shot. Sounds like they tried to make a good diagnosis prior to repair. $600 on a big diesel repair is not much in the grand scheme of things.

Let us know how it works out.

Everything about the place sucks...you probably already know that.

I'll take that back, the damn tiger is pretty cool, I just hate that he has to spend his life at a truck stop.

My problem with the guys at freightliner, they always seem to think it is the more expensive part that is causing the problem.you're right, a 600 dollar repair is not that big of a deal, as long as it fixes the problem, but it didn't. This stuff can run into big money fast.
Trying to avoid that and get some outside opinions.

I'm more of a Caterpillar guy, I've worked for them for two decades. And I'm also more of a tractor guy than truck.

But from what you've described it does sound like your turbo is not delivering sufficent boost when needed as evidenced by the faults. the only surefire way to know what is causing this problem though is to get your truck into a shop and lets them (1) run diagnostics and (2) troubleshoot the engine to verify thd findings of thd diagnostics. One thing you need to consider is that your turbo issues may be what is causing the loss of power BUT the turbo issue may itself be just a symptom of something else going on.

Yes, I agree with that, and I also think it may need to be running under a load, real, or simulated on the Dyno, to get to the bottom of it, How expensive is it to do that?

Well, with no load, I have experienced a cough, but really no problem, the heavier the load, the more pronounced of course.

Check the plumbing going out the cool side of the turbo. From there to the charge air cooler and into the intake manifold. Sounds like a boost issue and with the removal of all that stuff during the rebuild and turbo replacement, perhaps a hose is pinched or a pinhole developed somewhere. It wouldn't take a big hole to equal massive amounts of boost loss. Check it all.

Could you link a good one? I have tried a few, and don't seem to get any really new answers.
