What is with the love for Foo Fighters?

Ever since I started following this board I've noticed that their is a strong appreciation for Foo Fighters and it blows my mind. I've seen them twice and both times i saw myself checking the time more than I did watching the show.
Does it have to do when you were raised? I know people born in the late 70's/early 80's that are huge on that whole era of music (RHCP, Foo, Jane's Addiction, AIC, etc.) so I can understand where it holds a special place in their hearts. But for people who are not from that era, what makes Foo Fighters so great? You can barely distinguish between songs and it all sounds like Grohl is just screaming generic anthem rock into a microphone.
I will say that Grohl is a talented drummer but god damnit his voice is a trainwreck. And the substance of the music itself is just so empty. For anyone looking for comparisons I would say that the Black Keys are the Foo Fighters of today. I don't knock them for making basic, radio rock because they are literally drowning in money. But I don't see how they can have a legit following with almost zero connection to its fanbase, or at least nowadays.
I welcome suggestions, stories, or all other reasons to why you enjoy the Foo Fighters.

love for them has taken on a life of its own..
grohl is a cultural cool guy thus every thing he does it cool..
with all that said, he is pretty cool.. his songs just aren't that great, but that hardly matters..

I saw them at ACL in like 08 or 09
They destroyed a cover of "Young Man Blues". I mean killed it.
I left after that though, cause I mean...it was the Foo Fighters. Who cares. That was cool though. Props for that jam.

Yes. A Dead fan did just say that to criticize another band.

I mean, you can distinguish the years, hell you can even distinguish the tours within each year with the Dead

You have got to be shitting me. I first heard the Dead 35 years ago bro. That shite was the background of every family vacation of my childhood thanks to my stoner cousins. I have no problem with them , but it ain't exactly 52 flavors imho, bro.

I don't love Foo but I don't hate Foo. But they are the best of the mainstream bands and Dave Grohl is a likeable guy.
I think his voice is good enough.

quote:Exactly. You saw it as background music and didn't care to listen. No problem with that other than I think you're missing out. Their playing style changed so much between that 30 year span, it's pretty remarkable. Not to mention they had a legitimate connection to their fanbase. I mean people traveled across the world to see them over and over again. I could go on for hours but that isn't what this thread is about.

I'd really rather not turn this into a Dead discussion. I'm legitimately trying to figure out how people listen to the Grohl Band and enjoy it.

Dude. Your feelings are seemingly hurt because somebody doesn't love The Dead. And music is not "background music" for me. It's the main event. Maybe you are confused and are referring to the way you listen to music? I'm talking about hours of listening to The Dead and Dylan every Summer with my obsessed cousins. FTR, I'm NOT diminishing The Dead, I enjoy their stuff. I'm a legendary forgiving listener-the anti-hater.I was just noting your comment.
As for Foo Fighters, I think they are really solid. Not a top 20 band for me or anything though.

I am 26, I would say I like the Foo fighters, don't love them, can't name all their songs. But i know all of their hits.
However, I will say that seeing the foo fighters in concert has been on my music to do list for at least 7 years. I kept hearing how great they were live and it was true, that was the best show I have ever seen.
Can't tell you why everyone loves them so much. But i enjoy them and they are great live.

they are one of those bands that i dont get excited for, but normally wouldnt change the radio or skip the song if it came on. they get a bit boring, but that top tier of rock is pretty weak on competition right now (atleast in my book) so they get to be the torch bearer.

I like the Foo Fighters because they make great songs.
And while we are talking concerts, here's my favorite live version of any song.
Everlong - Skin and Bones

i dunno.... is the term generic rock anthem really "nowhere near accurate" for them? a lot of it is, for better or worse.

You went into those concerts knowing you weren't going to like it, no matter what they did.

Absolutely fricking killed it.

Great show, best I've seen at voodoo in years.

The greatest music event I have ever seen other than Red Hot Chili Peppers. Period.

That was hands down the most amazing show I have ever seen. I had read online that they bring it harder than any band, they were right. I have goosebumps thinking about it right now

Best show I have ever seen. Mind blown every second.

What's so hard to understand about that?

L.O.frickingL.
Dave's vocals are great. I literally can't name one bad song. I like some more than others, but nothing is bad. I'm sure the undying love is based mostly out of nostalgia. I love the Black Keys too, but I haven't been listening to them since I was a child.

Thank you, sir. I was beginning to think I was the only one. In the other thread I referred to them as stale and bland. It's nothing but generic, formulaic "rock" music. It's got no feeling; shite's got no soul.
