You people make it sound like a successful person can't have a problem...
Why should we care if that person doesn't want to fix the problem? All you're doing is saying "I have a problem woe is me but I don't really want to fix the problem".

I'm also a alcoholic, I'm not gonna lie. I don't know what you are going through, but with me my issues seem to come from depression.
I don't think I have ever found as much joy in life as others did, even when I was younger and didn't drink. Most of my joy used to come from either getting appraisal from my parents, or doing something that made other people like me, think I was funny, etc... nothing I did really made me happy unless it was something that made other people like me more (for whatever reason).
I drink regularly now, but I don't get stupid or act a fool... I'm actually a very intelligent person, and (believe it or not) drinking lowers me to a level that makes it easier for me to find the humor in things that I normally wouldn't. Along with pleasure in things that I normally wouldn't.
If you are depressed and an alcoholic... I feel your pain. And I'm sorry... I understand the pain of trying to go day to day and find enough joy in it to be happy, while at the same time feeling like the majority of that happiness comes from alcohol uplifting the situation.
I'm not sure if it was alcohol, my view on life and the world, etc... but I just stopped caring about stupid material shite...
People seem to get joy out of sharing the watch they bought, the shoes they saw, the video game they own... etc.... None of that really fuels my fire...

What's sad is you KNOW you have a problem and don't want to do anything to fix it.
Kudos to the girlfriend for walking.
You can be miserable all by your lonesome but you don't have the right to make anyone else's life miserable.

An addict is an addict weather its drug or alcohol. It's a personality disorder, addicts can not and should not be around any of the vices. Alcoholics can't just say hey im going to have a drink today, they drink til they can't anymore. Only a matter of time before you lose your house, job, and are living on the streets.

Why did you start this thread? You asked in your OP if this was irrational thinking, pretty much everyone says yes and some give you some solid advice, but it's like you're still seeking justification for and approval of your behavior. You even knew in your OP that you weren't going to get it here, so what was the point?

Well that's just not true

Is that a real question? You admitted expressly in this thread multiple times you have already made this decision, don't give a frick how it affects others, and are totally fine with that.

The thought that you're in med school is terrifying! It does take discipline and hard work! Which should scare you even more about your situation! You're capable of getting into med school, yet you can't quit drinking. Even after knowing how damaging it is to your body. Stop fooling yourself into thinking you're choosing not to quit. You can't quit - not without help. There will be more consequences, I just hope somebody doesn't have to die before you 'decide' to quit. Better make sure you've got some good malpractice insurance while you're at it!

Because I didn't think it would turn into this... Everyone deals with demons and apparently everyone here doesn't drink

It is thus far. Our lives are ultimately what we choose. At some point we can't use our past to define our future or else the cycle continues.

I don't drink to excess.
I had a Bloody Mary prior to one of the football games in September, 2 beers at the TAF party at the PMAC prior to another football game and a daiquiri today.
I'm an occasional drinker. That's 4 drinks in 2 months. Prior to the 2014 football season, the last drink I probably had was during the 2013 football season.

I'm done with med school... And I smoke.
Double whammy watch out!

You are an idiot.. and you don't know anything about people or what they can or can not do.
