It is and the book is been more twisted. The cenobites are more religious in nature. And the first thing they did was sensory improvement so that it makes light and sound unbearable.

Its still uncomfortable to watch, and not always in a fun way. Barker said it is much more terrifying when the "creatures" or villians in horror have a voice, and
have clear motives that justify their actions. I like wheres hes coming from on that.
