Since when have surgeons required a substantial deposit of $$ at first visit?

An 18 year old friend of my granddaughter had to see a surgeon for a pilonidal cyst that had been lanced by ER doc two days ago. She does not have insurance. Rather than have her pay at each visit, this surgeon required a $500 deposit and said she would be refunded $ not used. I have never heard if anything like this. Something just seems odd here.

Appreciate OT surgeons/doc's input. Thanks

They will also do this with the new outlandishly high deductibles

I have seen physicians charge up front for different things. It really just depends on their protocol for patients without insurance. It is strange that he would "refund the money not used". Typically they ask for a deposit that is a percentage of the total cost.. then negotiate payment for the rest of the procedure.

Your friend is breaking the law by not having insurance.

Considering that she doesn't have insurance, she is lucky that a surgeon is seeing her.

Once a surgeon cuts on a patient they are responsible , for lack of a better word, for that patient for 90 days.

Surgery costs are very high. $500 isn't very high imo.

That is substantial for a college student paying her own way. Her dad is a POS. He spent all the $ her mother left in trust for her. Still, since when has it become "we will refund what we don't use". No mention of when they will refund.
