A question for pasta experts

I want to try something new tomorrow. I've got some smoked sausage (already cooked). I want to slice it into bite sized pieces; mix it with pasta and some spaghetti sauce; add spices of choice. Put it in the oven and bake it like a casserole.
My question:
Can I put the pasta (small shells) in the covered pyrex dish dry and assume it will absorb liquid?
Or, should I first par boil the pasta and risk it being too mushy? TIA.

I would parboil it to right under al dente

I soak lasagna noodles in warm water before baking and they come it perfectly.
The same might work here

Thanks. All of these are helpful. Since small shells are less dense than lasagna noodles I think I'll go with your idea of soaking instead of par boiling al dente.

Id boil them half the time the package says and put them in the dish hot.
