Looks like a crab apple. We had a tree on some land we used to own that produced fruit similar to that and were told it was a crab apple. We would give them to an old woman who would make jelly out of them bitter SOBs.

This is a description of the acorn plum gall I was talking about. LINK
You can kind of see what looks like an acorn "cap" in your picture.
We have some which look just like the one in your picture under some of the oak trees at our property in Tunica Hills. Husband thought they were crabapples, but after researching a bit, I'm pretty sure they're galls. Cut it open & see if it looks similar to the pictures in the link or if it has seeds like a crabapple.

well, the picture that I posted is a jujube...I have seen them grown in central and south la. there, they are often called jewjews or something like that and they are made into jelly, etc.
I am not convinced that this is exactly what you found, but I suppose that with a bunch of bug stings or something like that, they could be similar...

Wish my jujubes would do that well. Think its a gall myself. Too big to be a crab, never seen a jujube like that, but i have seen galls look almost exactly like that.
