I know it sucks for anyone to be hurt, but with Durant out for at least another 6 weeks, and now Westbrook out for a while, OKC may be one of those previous assumed playoff teams that misses out this season to free up space for the Pels.

A minor fracture is what? A month?

Do we play them in that time frame?

It's not like the Pels are the only ones that affect their final record. If each of Westbrook and Durant miss the next 20 games, the Thunder will go something like 6-14 (they're already 0-2). If the Pels even go something like 11-9 in that span, that's a solid differential to make up.

A 5 game lead with 62 to play doesn't make me particularly excited.

Durant missing another month is actually the best case scenario. And it's also assuming that he immediatel comes back 100%. And the Pels could easily start off better than 11-9.

6-14 might be optimistic for them. They have a ton of key guys out right now.

quote:

That's hardly the end of the current injury list, either, with Oklahoma City now hoping to be granted a "hardship exception," reserved for the rarest of circumstances, to sign an extra player because of all that ails them. Mitch McGarry (broken foot), Grant Jerrett (ankle surgery), Anthony Morrow (strained knee) and Durant will allow them to quality for this exception, which mandates that at least four players miss three consecutive regular season games.

A second exception could be granted now that Westbrook has joined the bunch, though not until he misses three games. Oklahoma City must play its third regular season game (Saturday against the Denver Nuggets) before the first exception can be granted. They're still without super sixth man guard Reggie Jackson (ankle sprain) and guard Jeremy Lamb (back sprain) as well, though they may return soon.

I would think it does more bad than good.

Unless Durant and Westbrook miss a lot of time, the Thunder are going to make the playoffs, even if they don't have them for 4-8 weeks.

Teams that shouldn't beat them are going to beat them in that time frame, giving playoff caliber teams wins they might not have normally won.

How many times do the Suns, Mavs, and Rockets play them in that span?

Warriors rockets Grizz and raptors are the only legit playoff teams they play in the span. All once. Which sucks but it is also good because that means the second half of the season their schedule is going to be brutal.

That's a good thing. We want the other teams we're fighting for a playoff spot to my get a free win against a d-league OKC team.

If they go 5-15 in their first 20 games, which is not only possible but probable, they'd have to go 45-17 in their last 62 games to get to 50 wins.

That's a 72% winning percentage, which is the equivalent of winning 60 games in an 82 game season. So in one of the best scenarios for a Westbrook/Durant return, could easily be more than 20 games and they could be rusty/out of sync when they return, the thunder have to play 60 win caliber ball to just make the playoffs.
