My fireplace currently has tile around it. It doesn't look terrible but it could definitely look better. I'd like to resurface it with a stone facing or something similar.
What would be the easiest way to do this? I'm assuming I'd be fine just covering up the existing tile, right?

I would remove the old tiles and then put your new ones up. Are the new tiles the same size?

You could cover tile but would reccomend removing it.

No. Remove it. It's not very hard. People cross a desert on Thursday and do this type of job on Friday. You can figure it out

I had a brick fire place and I just attached hardy board to it with some concrete screws. I used that as the base for slate tile. You'll need stone veneer, and how thick you get will determine if you need to get rid of the tile that's there. Sounds messy, but you may need to pull them off.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy the $150 electrc demo hammer. Put the chisel bit on and shave the tiles off. They come off with ease. Clean your surface to get it flat and then retile / add stone / etc. Don't put anything on top of the existing tile.
