Does anyone here do this? I used to do it and stopped when I had my second child. Now I am thinking about messing around with it again. Just curious if anyone else does it?

I have not done it, but have always thought it would be a pretty cool hobby...does it save money over purchasing, or is it just done for fun?...

My thoughts and I doubt it. Must be fun if you have the time.

My dad used to do it when I was a kid. He had some 10" flat tail worm molds back in the 70's. I'd like to try to find the molds next time I visit him.

For personal use, prolly not. However, you can make certain variations to baits that makes it advantageous. I started doing it for personal use then starting selling a few. When I finally sold the business, I was shipping baits across the US and doing 4 shipments a year to the Uk. I will see if I can find a few pics.

Thanks. Sometimes there is a difference. I was fishing tee butte one time with two others. One was throwing live bait the other was throwing a H&H cocahoe. I was throwing mine and the only one catching fish. Mine were softer and I infused shrimp scent into the bait. At the camp the owner of the boat and camp asked me to sell him some. I walked down stairs, grabbed my tackle bag and gave him every tray I had.

How did you start your business, was it just by word of mouth and then got bigger? How did you come about pricing them? I have a lot of questions about this exact thing. Except I make hard lures, I carve them from cedar and I make bucktail spinner baits.

Yep.

To answer your other question. I had spreadsheets listing each ingredient and how much used per pack. Then I just added margin. It wasn't an exact science but good enough to make a few bucks.

My brother and I were watching some videos and thinking about making some as well. I want to make some molds off of some production soft plastics and make my own. The prices they charge these days for soft plastics is ridiculous.

There is lot more to making molds than popping them out. Two piece aluminum molds are simply the best, but they are costly. You can make two piece POP molds but you have to know how to vent them or you won't get full pours.

Zac post some pics of the wood lures. I've thought about carving wood lures but all the books I've seen want you to use an air brush to paint them.

That is the only way I have ever seen them done.

I paint my by hand, with a brush, it's easy enough, and I can sit in the living room and watch TV while painting. I'll post some pictures later.

Mister Twister stopped making Exude Cajun Crab. Someone should start there because I have been killing reds on those lately.

My "Go To" bass bait is a Sluggo. I can catch fish on it like nothing else. I do a bit of modification to it to get it to swim just right.

I recently decided to start pouring my own - I found this thread.

It is good for low-volume pours. Once I get my bait exactly how I like it with consistency, I'll get some aluminum molds fabbed up.

I'll try to post some pics over the next few months.

similar. There is a machine shop where I work that I'm pretty sure I could get a CNC mill of the mold, it's the pouring and the science of plastics I am unfamiliar with.

It will be cheaper and more time efficient to just buy a mold. The venting and other things involved make it quite time and material consuming to get it right. The "science" shite is easy.
