Sends some flowers and offer to Skype on your computer with those at the funeral. That easily should suffice and this way you get to go fishing and virtually attend the funeral.

I agree. Funerals are selfish at their very core as they are for the mourning of living and not the dead. If it was truly about the dead, then she would be cremated and a ceremony could be done for the spreading of her ashes, possibly at the lake with you.

Like one of my coaches in hs said....

You can miss weddings, baptisms, first communions, proms, confirmations .....but not funerals
