Counterfeit Money Experiences?

I was at a bar this past weekend and got $10 bill taken because it was counterfeit... Luckily it was early enough and not crowded enough that the bartender was able to "prove" it to me...
I was like, "Ok, well, give it back and I'll give you another bill" and he denied the request. He said that he wasn't obligated to return it and he would call the cops and I could bring it up with them. And being that I was with a friend who had a dog, I didn't think that would be the best idea...
What is the law on keeping counterfeit USD as a retailer/etc?

at a bank if they come across this they will keep it, like if it's in a deposit. They fill out a counterfeit currency form and send it to the secret service

They are abolutely supposed to keep it and turn it over to the secret service. Did you think they were supposed to give back to you so you can pass it off to someone else?

Worked security at a bar through college. Happens more often than one would think.
If the bill proves to be fake, it was our policy to keep it and turn it into the police.

My little brother's friends in high school used to print money and the lunch lady busted them. Secret Service got involved and fortunately they were minors at the time, but the feds raided their house and found $2,000 worth of counterfeit money. The kids are straight arrows now and both work for big companies so I'm surprised it hasn't been an issue. Oh - and no felony either.

Some drunk got a fake in their change and the bartender swiped a real 10 later that night.

I knew someone that printed money not too long ago.
only 100$ bills. He would spend days working the paper to get it soft enough to feel like real money.
Go to a dark bar in the quarter and buy a beer. Drink beer and leave with 90+$ in change.
He got busted in Florida using one at a horse race. Still in jail.

I got a counterfit 100.00 bill from regions bank back in the late 90's when I cashed my paycheck. When I went to deposit it that afternoon, after paying a few bills, they told me it was fake. It took all afternoon to convince them that it came from them but they eventually replaced the bill.

I got a counterfeit $20 from a bank atm, and the marijuana dispensary caught it.
i was annoyed, the bank said they would never give me a fake bill.
I lost $20. I was fricking annoyed, this was 4 or 5 years ago.
btw - in elementry school we would xerox $5 bills and use them at 6 flags to get $5 worth of tokens. worked until 6 flags busted one of our friends.

Shocked that a bartender would do that, must be some bad bills being dropped around there.
99% of the time, eateries, bars, etc will try to pass that shite back on to another customer, because they get screwd if they accept it.
I had buddies who worked at Armored car companies, and they sold grip off the truck(grip= boxes of coins, rolls of coins, bundles of 5's, 1's, 10's), and many places who got stuck with one would try to pass it back to them. A couple got burned, and his company took it out of his check.
fake 10's and lower can be hot potatoes, where they stop getting passed, no one knows.
I know the best place to dump fake bills is at a race track. Many have wood boxes, and their cash is put in it, and the cash flows to and fro from it, by the minute. Dumping 50-60 a race, is the easy way. that shite will be handed out to guy behind you, then he bets it, handed to another, it's like a cheap whore by end of night.

Fun fact about home printers these days -- some laser printers produce a microscopic code consisting of light yellow dots on every page that identifies the serial number of the printer. Some inkjet printers/scanners detect when currency is scanned or printed and alters the color reproduction slightly and/or, if trying to duplex print, will alter the off-set ever so slightly so that you don't get a perfect double-sided image.

Guy I know bought scalp tickets to national championship game and was denied entry. They didn't take the tickets so he scalped them to another poor bastard and his kid.
