Not only has Verizon been surreptitiously tracking its users for the last two years without consent, the method by which they're doing this is highly invasive, as they're actually modifying your HTTP requests. I'm actually quite stunned that none of this is illegal.

Curiously, while Verizon has been tracking users' online activity for two years, it was only last week that people started noticing that Verizon was using a controversial sort of "super cookie" that modifies user traffic to uniquely identify users. This Unique Identifier Header, or UIDH, broadcasts your identity across the web -- and remains -- and can be abused -- even if you opt-out of Verizon's programs.

Update 10-27-2014: My original motivation for this test page arose after reading several ad industry write-ups on Verizon's PrecisionID technology and practices, in particular the fact that in most cases, even after opting out of marketing options via Privacy settings, Verizon continues to inject trackers to every HTTP connection made from your device, whether it's an Access Point, mobile hotspot, tablet or mobile phone.

We are seeing clear evidence across the country of both consumer and enterprise devices having network traffic altered through these tracking beacon headers.

Most importantly, when present, AT&T and Verizon tracking beacons persist even after changing locations or IP addresses, and do so in spite of any browser privacy settings.

Additionally, a Verizon endorsed tech site named "Sugarstring" disallows articles from being written that pertain to domestic surveillance and net neutrality.

quote:

Verizon's wireless subsidiary is bankrolling a tech site called SugarString. It looks kind of like a regular news site at first glance, but scroll to the bottom and you'll see the words, "Presented by Verizon," followed by this disclaimer: "These articles were written by authors contracted by Verizon Wireless.

But you won't find any stories about spying or net neutrality, two broad policy topics in which Verizon has been controversially involved. The Daily Dot has the story: SugarString "is now hiring its first full-time editors and reporters." But, "In exchange for the major corporate backing, tech reporters at SugarString are expressly forbidden from writing about American spying or net neutrality around the world, two of the biggest issues in tech and politics today."

In this day and age, if you don't just assume everyone is tracking everything you do, you're in for a rude awakening.

Boycott SugarString. Don't give them any page views.

As for injecting a UID into headers...AT&T claims to let users opt out. I opted out last night and as of 3 seconds ago, my phone is still broadcasting a UID.

I'm pretty sure this is the reason why Google is pushing for all sites to move to secure pages only. They have enough points of contact across the web that they can still get a pretty good profile on you, but it would effectively lockout the ISPs data collection. They'd know that you go to Tigerdroppings.com but wouldn't have a clue which board you spend all your time on, but Google would.

That doesn't make it right.
