Died today 43 years ago in Macon County, GA due from a motorcycle crash.

Cheers to the man who is memorialized in Freebird.

Great Interview

Also, if you haven't seen the Muscle Shoals Documentary, you are wasting your life.

Blue Sky 9-19-1971 SUNY Stonybrook

Duane's solo, the first one, is absolutely mind-blowing. My favorite piece of guitar work, ever.

Does anybody here have his box set, Skydog? If so, is it worth the money?

I bought it when it came out. Definitely worth it if you are as big of a fanboy as I am.

You should also read the book written by his daughter, Galadrielle. Please Be With Me, A Song For My Father

Even though you post this all the time, it really is spectacular.

Maybe the greatest song ever. I think this was mentioned in that thread

The entire concert, especially towards the end when they start jamming, is smokin'. Stormy Monday, Blue Sky, You Don't Love Me, Dreams, and 'Liz Reed.

You can find their performance a few days earlier, the 16th I think, at the Warehouse in New Orleans. It's a full 2.5 hours.

If I have more than one son, and I have a hip, hip lady, one of the little frickers will have 'Allman' somewhere in their name.

Skydog - one of the coolest nicknames ever

what impresses me about the ABB so much was the syncopation and their sort of symphonic sound, (e. g. the timbales)

then the testosterone filled crescendos that made your blood boil and your pulse fly

then the mellow breaks, the birdlike harmonics

Berry Oakley's bass solo on Mountain Jam. is he an underrated bass player (er what)?

Unfortunately, he has such a small body of work for him to be discussed with his contemporaries. However, what one can find is absolutely wonderful. Due to the set-up of the ABB (two rhythm/lead guitars, two drummers, keyboard/vocalist), he was allowed to step beyond the usual role of a bassist and contribute heavily to melody. The solos he had in Mountain Jam and Dreams are nothing short of smooth, melty greatness.

Thank you. It's been on my Amazon wish list for a while but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
