quote:

The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand”, Pope Francis has declared.

Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

I am not catholic (non practicing atheist) but I have to say I am really impressed with this pope. He is dragging the catholic church into the modern age.

You understand that Benedict said the exact same thing, right? He even wrote a book on it.

They will burn him for heresy. Guy seems to be universally loved except those attached to the old traditional ways.

I'm Catholic and believe in evolution. I believe that God plans everything out, though, and knows all.

Pope is likely on same page, though a much better follower of Christ than I am.

from the article
quote:

Yet more recently, Benedict XVI and his close advisors have apparently endorsed the idea that intelligent design underpins evolution – the idea that natural selection on its own is insufficient to explain the complexity of the world. In 2005, his close associate Cardinal Schoenborn wrote an article saying “evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense – an unguided, unplanned process – is not”.

the catholic church has long endorsed the big bang theory as it establishes a beginning of time, and the certainty that there will be an end to time

I'm not sure about evolution, but I think for just as long of a period they've viewed evolution as the "how"

none of this is news

They think this means the Pope believes God didn't create the world and everything in it? Ridiculous.

God created all. Evolution & the Big Bang might have been the methods He used. If so, it changes nothing about God or the fact He created the world and everything in it.

The Catholic Church has not had an issue with evolution or the Big Bang for quite some time. Both are taught in Catholic schools for the last several decades.

quote:

Francis explained that both scientific theories were not incompatible with the existence of a creator – arguing instead that they “require it”.

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said.

He added: “He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfilment.

sounds like ID

this is just a case of perception of the messenger. benedict was a horrible conservative, while francis is an amazing liberal

if they say the same thing, people will hear different things based on how they perceive the reputation

You are a moron and evidently know nothing about Catholic beliefs.

Just this past Sunday, the deacon who teaches Sunday class to all of us who have kids in CCD stated that he believes the Earth and mankind was not all created within literally 7 days and that there were even...gasp...dinosaurs who roamed the land before humans.

I hold to a similar view of ID where natural selection and genetic mutations create additional variety of life from that which was originally created. Nothing about that is incompatible with any essential doctrines of Christianity.

This isn't a new stance from the Catholic Church. Catholicism might be the most misunderstood theology, but that's expected with the large number of cradle Catholics spewing misinformation.

this part is amazing

quote:

The Catholic Church has long had a reputation for being anti-science – most famously when Galileo faced the inquisition and was forced to retract his “heretic” theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun.
